Our daughter was like this for Santa but not the Tooth Fairy. We agreed to meet Santa out front and bring everything inside ourselves, but the fairy was cool for some reason

That and health & ag regulators both refrained from action for fear his constituents would murder them

I know you're not Famous Famous but I'm at least a *little* surprised at the number of anecdotes where matches aren't familiar with you. Do you get many "Long time listener, first time Grindr" folks?

It would be hard to find a more worthless framing of this. Social media intern, please let your editor know he's a jackass.

Not feeling especially energized that we're aiming for "the failed Turkish coup of 2016" as a more-or-less best case scenario.

Also the basis for discriminatory kidney care until eGFR calculations got updated starting in the halcyon days of... 2020.

It's stupid but that is actually what is on a lot of their vests

It sounds like the OG OG one was dual joystick, but I recall the "Tank control" version we're talking about being in a lot of adaptations. Even the version for graphing calculators

I'm pretty sure it's because that's how the game Tank controlled. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_(v...

Astalon: Tears of the Earth is the single game where I think corpse runs work. Rather than cash, they restore *health*, and can even overheal you slightly. Freedom to go elsewhere *and* a nudge if you're muscling through a tough section. Great game.

Made that last step broader by "That Thing You Do", which could not even be bothered to describe what is endearing

Outraged by Jan 6, he spent two years getting inside the top ranks of militias like the Oath Keepers. He was stunningly successful. He penetrated a new generation of militia leaders, which included doctors, cops & government attorneys. This is his story. www.propublica.org/article/ap3-...

Either drivers can't be bothered to be safe when they KNOW kids are everywhere, or driving is unsafe DESPITE their best efforts. Neither is good!

Admittedly it's silly for me to think an itch-only Twine game would become part of Gaming Canon, but I thought that The Writer Will Do Something pretty thoroughly suplexed this idea like... a decade ago

Far from the most pressing piece of this, but what distinction are they drawing between "Christian school" and "Parochial school"?

Also: not the right CEO even if she wants to do this ill-advised thing! BCBS Association essentially franchises their brand to different companies per-state, hence the otherwise-weird restriction to NY/CT/MO

My hyperbolic comparison is that only an idiot would suggest Coke's commercials be "Pepsi is good, too!" But insofar as that oversimplifies, it's that Pepsi and Coke are aligned in wanting more soda drinkers. Politics is *more* cutthroat, not less!

Adobe's enshittification makes me imagine this is like when somebody asks which Final Fantasy to play first, where the recs are all "Download this version from a decade ago, you can't buy it anywhere"

Lawbrain is real. See also: this was a Chicago judge's response to a survey leading up to their retention election this year. Straight up "Because I was elected once, it is wrong of you to ever ask if I should be re-elected." (And also he was retained, 70/30)

And so ubiquitous that even the Muppets joked about it on at least one occasion!

This is where I think the "Harris ran a perfect campaign" line actually holds -- she ran the perfect version of THAT middle of the road, Clinton-y Dem campaign. It just failed, again, because it's a pretty crappy model that has barely ever worked.

The complaint about the phrase “toxic masculinity” is a classic reversal of victim and offender: the moral emergency is not the sexist violence and degradation that women are complaining about, but the way that overhearing their complaints makes men feel.

Again, that is a PRO austerity take. The main scapegoats for the inflation spike are stimulus spending (incl the CTC), low unemployment (a byproduct of stimulus spending) and COVID supply chain/market shifts. If you hold Biden's economic policy as the main one, that is not a pro-CTC argument!
comment in response to post
If you want to argue that Bidenomics improved macro indicators without materially helping people on the ground, that's something that can be interrogated... but it's an argument *for* austerity more than against it.
comment in response to post
Biden admin as austerity government is an insane take. ARPA was $1.9T stimulus to families and social services. IIJA was $1.2T, with a lot on highways but also plenty on public services. IRA added $891B on top of that. Then add $175B in student loan forgiveness. That is not what austerity looks like

Child of a scion from the same side, whose faction largely got co-opted by those who seized power, who allied with them for years before finally turning against them? Main difference is that Char got lost in the sauce whereas Cheney is more "this guy sucks, specifically"
