@dpiponi In the good old/bad old days, it was understood that UIs and UX was typically bad because the subjects were not widely understood and were still evolving. Today it is pretty clear that UIs and UX is even worse because no one cares. Or so it seems on bad days.

@ifixcoinops Go go go!

@Aphelion Boo. No wait, that's your line. Go again. Eek!

@Aphelion I can make that rhyme! I shouldn't, but I can.

@diyelectromusic I like it!

@dpiponi I've visited, and even in person it's hard to get a sense of the scale.

@4raylee It naturally has a reference to [18], but really should kind of underscore it to their readers. [18] "What every computer scientist should know about floating-point arithmetic"; David Goldberg; ACM Computing Surveys (CSUR), Volume 23, Issue 1 Pages 5 - 48 […]

@wonkothesane Ok thanks. I've used Calibre for many years, but never needed that plugin before.
comment in response to post
@wonkothesane On the latter, is Calibre the preferred tool for bulk removal?

I’m also worried that the DOGE folks are just going to go into facilities and start unplugging -78 C freezers without thinking about destroying samples (or spreading diseases)

@Screwtapello I don't know what you mean. Lightweight apps (and frameworks) currently run on all major (and minor) platforms, even if that's not what you're currently accustomed to. Hypercard had some unique qualities, but that's a different story.

@dpiponi Yes, except that's not why they're anti-vaxxers.

@dpiponi I note that it works just as well to say it the other way around: "Eugenics is a deliberate feature of the US bad healthcare system".

@level98 What, all of us? ☹️

@dangrsmind Agreed, but there also seems to be an additional logic problem: what about the buyers?

@j_bertolotti Thanks! "Nature Physics" eh? What a hotshot. 😉
comment in response to post
@j_bertolotti I beg your pardon; egg on my face. Well then, do you have a reading list?

@dangrsmind "Richard Cory" (skipping first two stanzas), by Edwin Arlington Robinson, 1897: And he was rich—yes, richer than a king— And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the […]

@dangrsmind That article has a shitty headline, since a large part of what the vagus nerve does is "direct gut-brain communication", and this has been known for many decades. My wife and I have *joked* about the vagus nerve in that regard for decades. The first line of the article says what […]

@j_bertolotti Nice. But I think you meant 'arXiv:2502.01475v1' to be a link. I guess this is a whole sub-area of research. Years ago I saw a paper for *non*-holographic reconstruction of images through a scattering medium, frosted glass I think in their example.
comment in response to post
@Aphelion I wish I thought you meant that was *only* today. Anyway, my sympathies as always.

@dpiponi That's great! 😂

@dpiponi I had heard that Starbucks long ago colonized the whole world. Except Italy. Italy said, "We already do coffee just fine thank you". The experimental Starbucks in Italy died for lack of customers. They already had a coffee shop on all four corners of every block. (And I can vouch for […]

@dpiponi I ran this through clang: > f(n) = -1 if n is odd > f(n) = 1 if n is even ...and it said "invalid operation, not a formula". Maybe you could patch it.

@Aphelion 😆 🤣

@Aphelion Uh oh, looks like it (you / she her) got out!
