Thrilled to announce that Marina Alonso Bolaños and my article "Quiet colonialism: listening to the Cancuc uprising of 1712" has been published in the Journal of the Royal Musical Association! We started working on this back in 2016, so I'm really happy to see it finally out. doi.org/10.1017/rma....

From "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" to "it's the red one, right, Sergey?" From world power to client state.

This is a concentration camp. They are describing a concentration camp.

I still think the Woodstock ‘99 doc is our most politically explanatory film. Young white men, unhappy that women are on television, and unaware that they themselves are locked in an anarchocapitalist prison, generate sociality by stewing in their own filth and eventually burning down everything.

Absolutely delighted to announce that my article "On Chainsaws and Acoustic Violence: Sound and Deforestation in Ajusco-Chichinautzin, Mexico" has just been published online in Cultural Anthropology! 💚💚💚 journal.culanth.org/index.php/ca...

“This is bad, full stop. It creates a class of person who are forever excluded from civic life no matter how long they live here. It’s also a clear breach of the refugee convention.” Damn straigt, @colinyeo.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Your imposter syndrome should have died laughing at this point. You're doing great. You didn't author a bill to rename Greenland "Red, White, and Blueland." You can do anything.

🚨 NEW: A Russia-linked Telegram network is inciting terror and hate crimes in the UK. Already responsible for attacks on UK mosques, the network appears to be based in Russia - and it's gunning for violence on British streets. New from me & @hopenothate.org.uk hopenothate.org.uk/2025/02/10/e...

🎶 Bad Bunny's latest album has been both a critical and commercial triumph. Dr Andrew Green, Lecturer in the Music of Central and South America, suggests it resonates deeply by connecting with Puerto Rican traditions amidst growing discontent with the United States ⬇️ #BadBunny #DtMF #PuertoRico

Oops 😬

Blimey. The very notion that even while paying some of the highest tuition fees of any public HE system, domestic students might be considered by some institutions as an *expense*, tells of an incredible level of systemic incompetence and short-sightedness going to the very top

Great reminder that every hour you spend engaging with political content online is an hour you are not engaged in political action offline. www.404media.co/you-cant-pos...

💥New: @tweeterbarr.bsky.social explains why academic libraries are making these decisions and what it says about the wider academic publishing sector in the UK. #HigherEducation #ScholComm #OpenAccess blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci...

The tariffs are mad; but what’s equally mad is that they somehow come as a surprise, when Trump has campaigned non-stop on this and controls all branches of government Precious time has been lost, but it’s not too late for countries to mount an effective response 1/x

Looking forward to sitting down and watching this new season of The Boys where Homelander has just become presi - oh wait that is actually just the news isn't it

Based on 32M tweets from parliamentarians in 26 countries over 6 years, reaserchers confirmed that "radical-right populism is the strongest determinant for the propensity to spread misinformation. Populism, left-wing populism, and right-wing politics are not linked to the spread of misinformation."

Heads up! The @aclu.org Immigrant Rights Project has an EXCELLENT online resource available in multiple languages to walk immigrants or advocates through various scenarios of encounters with immigration officials or police. It includes contact #s for local ACLU offices. www.aclu.org/know-your-ri...

Pin this, save it, we’ll need it. “When a prison camp opens in your town…when a DREAMer is disappeared from your classroom…when the President destroys what’s left of the Constitution…They will all say they didn’t know this was coming. And I want the American people to know that they did.” AOC 🔥🎯

Here are some great actions that we can take today rather than wasting time arguing whether or not we saw what we know we did. I did not create the below, but find it quite solid: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

"Your Ukrainian skills are getting mouldy" до біса дуолінго, це Різдво

If you think that you have to fight tooth and nail to get arts funding sometimes, spare a thought for the Cuban National Ballet, who literally wrote to Fidel Castro to ask for funding *in the 1950s while he was a guerrilla fighter hiding in the mountains*

This picture of a man in a Spongebob Squarepants costume next to a HTS fighter will forever be remembered as the historic image of the Syrian Revolution. It will appear on book covers. There will be murals of it. Syrian space rovers will carry it with them as they search for alien life

Trying to keep up with unfolding events in Syria. A humble request for anybody else broadly situated on the left: can we please not do the whole "anti-imperialism of idiots" thing again

What if I told you that the only reason I am bald is that I’m afraid of a Ratatouille situation? What if I told you that I’d have so much hair if not for the fear of a rat using me like a puppet? These are modes of control, Neo. This is how they manipulate us. Ratatouilles, Neo. Rats that pull hair.

Really delighted to announce that my book, Making Mexican Rock: Censorship, Journalism, and Popular Music After Avándaro, has been published! See below for details. www.vanderbiltuniversitypress.com/978082650728...

It's not just about Twitter. The entirety of corporate-owned social media makes money out of their websites being toxic and depressing places. Digital commons can be life-affirming and fun - but not if they're taken over by private companies.

Okay academics, we’re all feeling very pleased with ourselves at having worked out how to overcome a stubborn collective action problem. Now for Elsevier.

I really hope that people realize that the X-odus to this platform is not just about Twitter. We need a wider reflection about the *entirety* of the corporate takeover of social media/online comms
