Trump pushes a new con for his fundraising. Taxpayers will get a check because of DOGE slashing of government agencies that do crucial work. Narrator: They won't.

Nice

😄

Nate Silver’s post here is strange, in part because it’s VERY clear from studying history that, sure, there are some smart people, but if anything history is *mostly* shaped by dumb people, mistakes, or—most dangerously—misperceptions. It’s the smart people who fix the problems made by the latter.

MUSK LOSES BIG IN GERMANY Germany’s CDU/CSU wins big, while the far-right AfD underperforms in second—despite backing from Elon Musk and JD Vance. AfD is now likely to be completely shut out of the governing coalition.

So the new official line is: We, the US provoked Putin to invade Ukraine (which started it to begin with) and because we did, we are now entitled to 500bn of Ukraine's rare earth minerals. Am I getting this right?

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

"Musk and Vance Lose German Nazi Vote" is a peak 2025 headline.

Now that he has been confirmed, we must be vigilant in monitoring Vought's actions as OMB Director. Bridget Dooling, professor of law: "(W)hat’s at issue is much, much bigger than our current president; it is the notion of checks and balances itself.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/04/o...

Recommend the thread. As Taniel notes, this is actually an underperformance of the polls for AfD. Some people will insist this means Musk et al hurt them, but polling these elections is also just hard. CDU has sworn they won’t form a coalition with AfD, and they seemed pretty serious about that.

And yeah, I used "praetorianism" as shorthand (somewhat breezily) for "establishing a palace guard," but whichever term we choose, it is the winnowing of an apolitical military and creation of a personal military force loyal to a single leader. (The actual praetorianism comes later.)

Federal workers in limbo. Employees at HHS getting emails telling them to justify their jobs and NIH instructing workers to hold off before responding. Obtained from a source familiar.

Another Texas #BlackHistoryMonth thread. When the Houston Black Buffaloes baseball team launched in 1907, a featured attraction at their shows was Sid Isles' Ragtime Band, one of the hottest acts in the the state and incredibly influential among Texas musicians of their day.

New study out in @sfjournal.bsky.social. We find Christian nationalism is among the leading predictors of multiple measures of racial solidarity, but ONLY FOR WHITES. For Blacks, CN actually seems to make them LESS inclined to advocate for themselves in politics. 1/3 academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

Wow! DIe Linke does much better than expected, while both CDU and AfD fall below symbolically important 30% and 20%, respectively. FDP might still make it, BSW less likely. Grand Coalition is possible but narrow margins... #BTW25 #GermanElection

New — I wrote about how the 5 bullets email is nothing but an escalation of Musk and the Trump administration’s psychological war on federal workers. Read here:

We can help shift the tide! Wisconsin must have fair electoral maps going forward. Answer Musk’s money with a blizzard of small donations. Give Musk the finger and support Judge Susan Crawford for the open WI Supreme Court seat. Our democracy depends on it. secure.actblue.com/donate/hrccr...

“We now have a president of the U.S. who subscribes to the same worldview of coercive conquest as the president of Russia.” And one who tramples the Constitution domestically. It’s not too late to turn this around. But the 2026 midterms are our last best hope www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

Biblical content and virtue lessons are part of a new request for proposals from the Education Department. #oklaed ow.ly/zsg950V4MhB

Oklahoma ranks near the bottom of the nation in education, yet officials want to spend taxpayer money on Bible lessons instead of real solutions. Maybe focus on math, science, and reading first?

There are 30,000 federal jobs in Michigan, serving our families in everything from the VA, to Social Security, to our Great Lakes and the border. Every single GOP member of Congress needs to explain what they’re doing to protect those jobs and services. www.detroitnews.com/story/news/p...

GERMAN ELECTIONS today. 2 exit polls just released: CDU-CSU (conservatives): ≈28.5-29% AFD (far-right): ≈19.5-20% SPD (social-dems, center-left): 16-16.5% Greens (center-left): 12-13.5% Die Linke (left): 8.5-9% BSW (left but with anti-immigrant lane): 4.7%-5% FDP (free-market right): 4.9%-5%.

Merz poised to become the next German chancellor after today's election as his Christian Democrats lead with 29% in exit polls. The AfD had 19.5% and Social Democrats had 16%. But Merz likely has to form a three-party coalition to govern. @jimtankersley.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

Poll have closed in Germany’s parliamentary elections. The conservative Christian Democrats appear poised to win, with the hard-right Alternative for Germany party in second place. Follow live updates.

He is admitting that he doesn’t want lawyers to stop him from breaking the law. No one would stop him from issuing lawful orders, so this has to be about unlawful ones.

Results are in — 1 out of every 5 German voters decided they wanted a far-right extremist party in power.

“We fired all the guards at the bank so they’re not roadblocks to anything that happens.”

Interested to read better informed reactions, but a CDU led coalition that excludes the far right doesn’t seem like a bad result.

Dear Dems. This is a reminder that Donald Trump rescinded the ethics rules preventing gifts to executive branch employees. Now would be a good time to propose legislation formalizing the prevention into a law Time to do things that make him react to you. apnews.com/article/trum...

Update: The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts in a late-night email confirmed that some judges and judiciary staff received OPM's email. "Please be advised that this email did not originate from the Judiciary or the Administrative Office and we suggest that no action be taken."

I’m hoping @saraheckhardttx.bsky.social and @ginaforaustin.bsky.social are doing whatever they can to keep TX DOGE from destroying state infrastructure.

Elon, I hate to break it to you but you aren’t my boss. I answer to the people of Minnesota. But since you bring it up, I spent last week fighting to stop tax breaks for billionaires like you, paid for by defunding health care for moms and babies

Sadly, my gut tells me he'll side with Musk. I hope I'm wrong

At some point, Trump has to decide who is running our government. Musk - who according to the White House is just an advisor - or the actual appointed leaders of agencies, who in many cases are telling federal employees not to respond to DOGE/OPM emails.

DOGE isn't saving us money. DOGE is forcing us to DIY society--to manage all the costs, risks, and problems that government is best poised to solve.
