Tonight in Art Therapy with the Plucky Shrimp, we are speaking on behalf of the ocean, and are VERY mad, not only at the evil guys in charge but also at every evil person who enables the evil guys in charge. Every last one. May they know no peace for the rest of their miserable lives.

Endure amidst the current Be motionless in the tumult When the shadow descends Be muscle, be maw, be might And fend with one's being entire

Nemeic's manifesto in Andor, which feels extremely relevant:

This will also be true on March 1st. And true for THE NIGHT INSIDE (Toronto in the '90s, Queen Street, my old apartment on St. George Street, reclusive millionaires, snuff films, and vampires).

The attacks on DEI are a pretext for a much more radical agenda of reversing the gains of the civil rights movement, an objective the Trump administration is pursuing with zeal. A Great Resegregation. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Not what I expected to find on a snowy sidewalk.

Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion in 2021, ProPublica found in a first-of-its-kind data analysis. The rate of sepsis shot up more than 50% for women hospitalized when they lost their pregnancies in the second trimester.

The Warren Zevon classic ‘Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner’ is definitely enhanced by the sound of a helicopter circling overhead. For a moment, I thought it was part of the fade out I’d never noticed before.

A bonus of the otherwise annoying amount of snow we got is this cool guy in our back yard.

“Do not bend your neck for that which cuts necks.” A Sumerian proverb, as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

If you're looking for a good wintry read, A TERRIBLE BEAUTY (a fairy tale retelling featuring remote mansion, mountains, winter, art, fabulous dresses, and vampires) is on sale for $1.99 today.

An EEOC admin. judge sent a fiery all-department email this AM alleging: 1. Trump's exec orders & instructions to target private citizens with them are illegal. 2. the judge had sent an earlier email with a similar tone yesterday that later vanished from their sent folder & colleagues' inboxes.

New year, new sales. BLOOD AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS and A TERRIBLE BEAUTY are both on sale for $1.99 today. Japanese vampires, climbing in Banff, Toronto goth clubs, cross-Canada journeys in one, and decadent art, a remote mansion, a mysterious woman, and a retold fairy tale in the other.

Number of opossums I’ve seen in Toronto: 2. Number of LIVE opossums I’ve seen in Toronto:0.

Reading THE CITY IN GLASS by Nghi Vo and it is so, so good. Absolutely my jam and exquisitely written.

Turns out that Martha and the Muffins is the perfect music for mincing garlic to the beat. Plus the added bonus of a trip down memory lane for this Torontonian of a certain age.

if they want to go back to the 1950s, we’re bringing the cuisine back to the 1950s too. you put me in the kitchen, I will spend 100% of my time in there finding how much horseradish and shrimp I can put in Jello before God personally comes down here to stop me.

Had a dream involving the 1960s Rat Pack and Betty Kennedy. I get the former (listened to Kill James Bond episode on Ocean’s Eleven) but how a Canadian journalist from the 1970s ended up there is a mystery.

Working on getting back into new book this week. Last week's chaotic day job ate headspace. As I discovered last few months with last book, getting deep into Weird Novel headspace is fabulous way to spend These Times. I want to get grounded into this one more. Trying to think what made last click

Also my mantra for 2025.

My mantra for 2025!

What would be a *really* good revenge is if you killed your enemy's kids and baked them in a pie and served it to your enemy for dinner but you also put raisins in it.

I've been holding my fire about this but it turns out there's a serious pathology in our public discourse about how we think & talk about the extreme wealth of a Musk or Bezos. Almost all of it is in the form of *stock* in massive corporations—Amazon, Tesla, Meta—& that makes its owners dangerous

I've always felt like this dragon of the Heynesbók manuscript (16th century book of law) is really tired of its job. Tired of flying around menacingly and tired of all the Icelandic mutton. It is the Danny Glover of dragons. It is too old for this shit.

Today’s #ArtAdventCalendar is from a time when I tried lino-cut. I carved a burrowing owl and made a few prints, and scanned one to craft this digital illustration of how I think they behave underground where we can’t see them! (Maybe @burrowingowl.bsky.social can confirm.) #birds #art

This autumn I finally got some fog for this scene. I’ve waited 5 years for the combo of colour, fog and no wind. No lies. The latter is a rarity in this part of the world. Really pleased with how it turned out #landscapephotography #woodland #wales

Ok, the problem with this first draft is that it's not nearly weird enough. Time to look at some surrealist art and get crazy.

learning French has really encouraged me to live in the moment because I currently cannot conjugate any other verb tense

Someone called this mass exodus from Twitter ‘the fall of the Broman Empire’ and I died laughing. 💀

If you're looking for something to read in the dark days of December, I can highly recommend EXPERIMENTAL FILM by @gemmafiles.bsky.social - on sale today for $1.99. Oh, and my novel BLOOD & CHRYSANTHEMUMS (sequel to THE NIGHT INSIDE) is also on sale today.

It would be so great if you could RT my Etsy shop in the twoots below/above. My🌲 jewellery orders usually make up a significant part of my income at this time of yr but the X exodus has meant I’ve only received 1 order-pretty scary income-wise. A small boost would help so much. Thankyou🌿

One of my favourites. Fascinating content and the rapport between the hosts is always fun.

There was a recent thread of people showing what creation they were proud of - so here's one of mine. My first published novel, conveniently on sale today! openroadmedia.com/ebook/the-ni....

It's important that you look through the gallery for this listing until you get to the top floor bathroom. Important. www.cbmaritimerealty.com/listing/2024...

In the last six weeks, I've read Paris '44 (Patrick Bishop), Legacy of Violence (Caroline Elkins), am reading The Hollow Crown (Dan Jones) and Postwar (Tony Judt) just came in from the library. I'm going to need to read several Miss Fisher mysteries to clear my head.

I’m grateful to all the adults who told me my teen years would NOT be the best of my life and that I would be far happier in my 30s and beyond. They were absolutely right.

If you're a creator who: -Takes long break periods -Creates very slowly -Has another full time job or engagement -Struggles with productivity -Is inconsistent I'm sorry to tell you... YOU'RE STILL A VALID CREATOR BECAUSE CREATING IS TIED TO PASSION, NOT PRODUCTIVITY🫶🏻
