I don't know if it's helpful but for me, it's seasonal. 10 years ago, I would not have enjoyed Becky Chambers. Three years ago, I would not have picked up Sue Lynn Tan before the new Rivers Solomon or Han Kang but that's where I am now even though I'm *sure* the Kang will be perfect. Dunno.

The slow burn fascination with the killer, her notions of pleasure, and the way the main character Rika then explores food does not tally with the last section of the book.
I can see why some would love it and many have been betrayed by the marketing. For me, it was just fine.

The way this book explores body image and fatphobia and the enjoyment of food misses the mark repeatedly. There are some interesting points about misogyny and mechanisms of fatphobia but it’s addressing a culture of thinness that undermines lots of the critiques made. Then, 2/
