🤩 9 amazing research papers and a brilliant editorial, all freely available, thanks to the collective effort of our community #DOJ #OpenScience ⚒️👇🏽

As Farage gears up for appearing on BBC One about grooming gangs, it is really important that he is called out on it. There have already been inquiries into grooming gangs. Likes of Farage want to make them about race, they aren't, and trying to pretend otherwise allows other offenders to carry on 👇

If you didn't know, I have a highly niche #geology and #paleontology #SciArt shirt for sale. A treat for you or the paleo nerd in your life. I'll be putting new designs up soon, too. www.geologyjohnson.com

Kudos to editors of Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry for this detailed retraction notice. * link to @pubpeer.com thread. * background: of the 7 authors, 6 were added to the revised version without approval by the editor. Most likely paper mill. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Do you intend to publish in the diamond open access journal AGC in 2025? Here are the different manuscript types: -full-length articles -reviews -technical notes -comments if you have any question about the editorial policy, please go the website page journals.uu.se/AGC/editoria...

Now we're looking for an "enthusiastic PhD student"...🙄 When I was in academia, an autistic PhD student once kindly educated me about how conveying *enthusiasm* was, for them, incredibly challenging...

Ready for some more interesting facts about earthquake magnitude? Each whole number increase in magnitude is a 10x increase in the measured amplitude (size of earthquake waves recorded on a seismometer), but represents 32x more energy released. This video gives a visual demonstration.

Ammonite is much loved in Japan. The logo of the Paleontological Society of Japan is an ammonite. For the most people, a fossil = an ammonite fossil.

This from the Geological Society of Australia regarding the proposed / impending disestablishment of the Earth Science Major at the University of Wollongong. #earth-science

Another example why the world needs more geologists and geoscientists. Another route for geology to save the world and a great way to make a job market for those leaving the oil and gas industry 🧪⚒️ www.nature.com/articles/d41...

📣open PhD Position📣 We’re looking for a PhD student to experimentally investigate the role of aqueous fluids in the transfer of carbon in subduction zones at @unimuenster.bsky.social🇩🇪 in collaboration with the University of Perugia🇮🇹. More info here stellen.uni-muenster.de/jobposting/7...

Less than a month for the AGU annual meeting in Washington D.C. to take place. There are whispers that we are on site with Geomorphica stickers! Share this post if you want some, then we know how many to pack! See you 💙

Anyway here’s a cheerful piece about how the Sun will eventually destroy all life on Earth (but not by exploding, so, you know, there’s that)

Calling all #Mineral Physicists, Experimental Petrologists, Geophysicists, Geodynamicists and Geochemists studying the Deep #Earth and Planetary Interiors! I have created a Starter Pack! Please share, and let me know of other people or organizations on here who should be added! go.bsky.app/TapnEve

Last Friday was great! 😀 I got to talk about geology and my research to the enthusiastic 𝗝𝗦𝗣𝗦 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 participants at the Kagawa Chuo High School. 🧑‍🔬🌏🗾🎌 #earthscience #scienceoutreach #scicomm

Some 780 million years ago, a massive, singular continent, Rodinia, was being torn apart by convective forces within the Earth. In Glacier National Park this tumultuous event is marked by a thin, dark igneous rock, squirted between layers of limestone, the Purcell Sill, adding favor to Mt. Gould.

You can now add Bluesky to the Sharer widget of your Owlstown website.

It's up!!!! My Explainer video for BlueSky beginners. I cover how to find your Twitter followers, Starter Packs, Feeds, Lists, some handy-dandy tools, and BlueSky etiquette. Please watch and/or share with any newbies you know. I think it's helpful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_V2...

So I’m learning to make @bsky.app really work for you requires learning the tools- just added a “Mutual” feed so I can see posts from those who both I follow AND they follow me! And now I see there are other ways to get the feeds you want- thanks to @allochthonous.bsky.social for these geo feeds!

This is why AI sucks so much. It does not return correct information. It returns incorrect correct-sounding information, written confidently.

Here are beautiful well formed Almandine garnets in Quartz. I don't just love fossils, minerals are fun too!

The cat is (finally) out of the bag...my FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK! is here! 📚✨ "How the Earth works" (DK Books) takes inquisitive 7-9 year olds on a journey of discovery into the inner workings of our planet, and is now available for pre-order! Links in my profile! #SciArt #geoscience #kidlit

BEWARE! The earthquake predictors have arrived and they’ve preemptively blocked many (maybe all?) of us that fought back against their pseudoscience and harmful messaging on the other site. If you have a question about earthquakes be sure to talk to an actual expert - many are here!

I know we’re four years on from The End of #Racism™️…but if you’re still interested in learning about the deeply personal impacts of racism, this story about Vinicius Junior, a footballer at Real Madrid, is well worth 3 mins of your time: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

🆕 🔔 New paper published in TEKTONIKA: "Effect of Grain-Size and Textural Weakening in Polyphase Crustal and Mantle Lithospheric Shear Zones" By J. Ruh, W. Behr and L. Tokle from CSIC Barcelona and ETH Zürich. tektonika.online/index.php/ho... ⚒️ 🧪

Read the last paper published in 2023 by TEKTONIKA DOAJ! Trexler et al. used balanced cross-sections to demonstrate that a thin-skinned structural style may explain the structure of the Greater Caucasus. They estimate a minimum tectonic shortening of 130-200 km. ⚒️ 🏔️ 🧪 doi.org/10.55575/tek...

A large M7.6 #earthquake and tsunami threat in Japan, but for once it is not associated with the subduction thrust off the east coast - it's a higher angle thrust in the overriding plate on the west coast (subducting plate here is probably 100+ km deep) earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

I tend to think this gets forgotten in discussions of science funding. There are many that want all three and that probably underlies a lot of the frustrations with the current postdoc issues.

Just done an #AGU23 short talk on the #OpenScience session, representing @geomorphica.bsky.social Dimond Open Access Journal team. We welcome more submissions, signing up reviewer database, and getting involved! 🥳

Imagine our profession was built so that you could advance your career without moving all the time. Isn't this a huge piece of the equity and access problem? Yes, it is.

TEKTONIKA Diamond Open Access journal has now 5 new associate editors. Welcome to: - Guillaume Duclaux @gduclaux.bsky.social - Devin McPhillips - Conor O'Sullivan @cmnosullivan.bsky.social - Xuhua Shi - Sebastian Zapata Henao Their bio coming soon on our web site: tektonika.online

Fellow geoscientists, if you have students attending AGU for the first time, tell them about how the session codes work! It took embarrassingly long for me to realize the numbers tell you when the session is, e.g. S41A is on the 4th day (Thurs) in the 1st block (8:30-10:00).
