💯. I am just mystified how using the trainees diversity status to defund them is legal when there is an equivalent mechanism for non-diverse applicants. Would love some lawyers to chime in here #laborlaw #discrimination #breachofcontract #legalhelp

Get ready to FOIA NIH. Make them show their cards: the funded diversity Fs were in line or exceeded the scores of regular funded nondiversity funded Fs. So then not merit based, just blatant discrimination. Diversity is not a score-able criteria, just differentiates where the money comes from. 🤬

Just one day without mass chaos would be nice.

This is beyond embarrassing. 😳

I just don’t understand how. But no one seems to even be trying to stop him. How tf did we get here?!?!?

This will continue to be postponed and livelihoods and scientific advancements are going suffer the consequences. You can nay say, but you said calm down and wait til Feb 1, now that’s been pushed back further. You don’t know because you aren’t in it and doesn’t affect you.

Decisions on ALL funding have been further paused. If some uneducated trump minion decides a grant is “not in line with administration priorities” in any way they can cancel current awards and block review of pending. It’s not just DEI but those are their priorities.

Another sweeping extension of the pause in ALL federal funding of science now subject to potential cancellation mid-stream: bsky.app/profile/mari...

There are lots of good scientists on here and other platforms trying their best to interpret the science for the masses and dispell any misinformation. I’ll try to remember to come back and tag accounts when I have more time!
comment in response to post
Also you can say this sitting comfortably outside the line of fire. So…

I’d be tickled if you were right about this. But I strongly suspect you are not. And it is not the communications pause that we are so worried about. As I said the gutting of existing grant programs removes opportunities for good science and scientists to be funded. And that is NEVER a good thing.
comment in response to post
I’m not going to blindly hope for the best, that requires a faith in trump that doesn’t exist in any fiber of my being. I’ll prepare for the worst. Rally folks to stand up for science and medicine and rational thought. And breathe a sigh of relief if someone is able to reason with this monster.

Not blowing out of proportion, as you so astutely pointed out, that this unpredictable and irrational admin has already executed things more aggressive than we thought. Has put forth a candidate, whom will be approved and whom pitched even more aggressive proposals.
comment in response to post
Sure not promised to an individual. But the opportunity was taken away after everyone put their hard work into writing the grants with the promise of review for a chance. Now those opportunities are gone. But I have a grant that was funded that NIH staff are not allowed to communicate to me about
comment in response to post
It is reasonably attributed to this admin. Was done in the same sweeping call for a pause. Notifications of grant awards are directly related to this. You can excuse away his behavior. But best you’re speculating everything will come back online exactly as it was and we KNOW that is not true. Facts.
comment in response to post
I do not believe we’re overreacting. Every other admin was clear in their intentions. Gave information as changes were instituted. Even ones I didn’t vote for, even previous trump admin. This is different. He’s out for blood. Grants & our jobs aside look at his pic for head of HHS. It’s malicious.
comment in response to post
No it is not. They canceled mid stream a number of grant programs. Some of the ones that were supposed to be reviewed a few days no longer exist. Some were terminated mid stream end dates going from 2027 to Jan 25, 2025. I’d make sure you know what you’re talking about before telling us we are wrong

If suddenly your boss was like hey, these guys that owe us money just ghosted us, they’re not paying. Where do you expect the money to come from to pay people? To do the job? To buy supplies? Even if delayed. It can have catastrophic consequences. All these labs are like small businesses.
comment in response to post
Not sure what is not making sense here. And when things come back online we have someone up for confirmation that has promised to decimate a system he is neither a part of, understands or is educated on. So I have no faith things will be solved quickly. This = job loss, productivity loss.
comment in response to post
With this admin, yes. If not, they would have been postponed, not canceled. But even if only paused. My grant expires Jan 31. Was expected to be renewed Feb 1, normally I’d have the notice of award in hand by now. I don’t. Which mean delays. Which means inability to pay people.

I’m worried about our presence on the biomedical science stage more than my single job. But yes, we have grants waiting on approval, no word no money. Grants in study sections that were abruptly canceled day of. No review no money. No money -> no jobs -> no science. Follow me?

Haha. Well down in SC where I am now we were closer to like +27 deg, maybe 10 with windchill. So I probably shouldn’t complain. But snow in coastal Carolina is pretty unheard of so it was fun while it lasted! Stay warm and thank you for your kind words. 🤗

Don’t disagree. But we are battling a different problem at the moment. Will there even be a system to make good changes to after the current admin has their way with it.

💔 this is awful. And why what he is doing is so dangerous and alarming. I am so sorry. I hope things get sorted out quickly and your friend gets the treatment they need asap!
comment in response to post
To be clear, because I do not support misinformation (that is why we all left Twitter) he did not cancel all grant and research funding. He put a big pause on it w/real murky, unclear intentions and little information about how things move forward. The uncertainty and the man behind are concerning.

I wish I had answers. As more information becomes available we will develop strategies for fighting this. For now I urge everyone to contact their senators and their reps in congress. Emphasize how important research is ti so many things but most importantly to the health and well being of citizens.

I’m gonna need you all to do something about the weather. I lost my Michigan winter thick skin. Can I do my science in a bivy suit? Maybe we can make this work!
comment in response to post
It’s their gameplan. Can’t let them get away with it.

Hi. Fellow anxiety sufferer and accused catastrophizer. I don’t want to incite panic. But I do want to incite action. I’m trying to channel my anxiety and anger into something productive. TBD if that’ll work but I’ll sure try. We can use all the help we can get if you can muster it. 🙏
comment in response to post
Sure. Some thing might come back. But at what cost and how long will it take and what knowledge will be lost forever in the midst and how many people will suffer. So science may bounce back some day. But so much will be lost along the way that will not recover.

Very much appreciate your hard work and your voice in this fight. This idea that government employees are lazy is being perpetuated by people who have too much time on their hands (i.e. aren’t giving 100% to their jobs) their complaints are inspired by their own behavior. Ignore the noise.

Be loud about it. Inundate their inboxes, Republican and Democrat representatives. Encourage everyone you can to vote at every election. Provide solid resources to those who don't understand. Propaganda is wild and spreads quickly, fight it with concrete, irrefutable facts...on repeat.

Thank you. 🙏 Vote that anger away.

Unclear on what exactly has been undone by the current admin. What is clear, they're going after programs that support individuals underrepresented in STEM, those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. Which is sad and pathetic.
