uh oh... I was already seriously considering or am well underway for 3 out of 5

“you should have a choice” means “we get to choose for you”

crab convergent evolution but it's every weight loss scam eventually reinventing the cabbage soup diet

I’ve said many times that I am a better person for having read Discworld, and it’s true if you’re going to base your morality off a book you could hardly do better than Pratchett

I am truly loving Andor so this is a minor quibble, but the hints that he is somehow weighted with destiny in the last couple episodes doesn't really do anything for me.

As the curator of animal advent, I can confidently say that this is an officially approved use of the Crabvent Calendar.

As I told Sarah when I met her recently, in our house we did not use the crab advent (crabvent?) correctly but would randomly ask it questions like it was an oracle of Delphi and then pick a random square to scratch off, and then tried to interpret the crab fact accordingly.

@whysharksmatter.bsky.social is one of our most frequent “recaps”—we’re lucky enough to catch (up with) him in the field at least a few times a year!

It’s time to reconsolidate a counterculture and politics against this shit. Science, art, medicine, poetry, philosophy as the beautiful life, the fullness of human civilization, that they want to destroy. Humanism, not cynicism, not slop, not tech “””nerd””” culture

Working in academia in America right now is like having a broken tooth. You can kind of chew around it, and occasionally you even forget about it, and sometimes, the pain is so sudden and acute, sobbing is the only possible response.

Has anyone considered the possibility that they legit think they are negotiating with China, but are actually the prank victims of a drive-time morning zoo radio program in Shanghai?

I’ve never understood the protests as a way to influence Trump. I believe they’re important because they’re a way to tell each other that we’re not okay with this. They’re a way to communicate with other Americans and hopefully suppress further normalization of Trumpism in everyday life.

What kind of society do we want to be, actually? Do we take this little pride in doing something properly for ourselves? Do we care this little about getting things right? Using AI, in its current state, to write questions for the California Bar Exam? Are we not ashamed?

I will say it again: If we make it through this dark period with democracy intact, it may be because the administration's incompetence was greater than its depravity.

The kind of nihilism Anna highlights here is poison to a functioning society. Have to conquer it to rebuild.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been sitting in a Salvadoran prison for over a month because the Trump Admin made a mistake. Now, the Admin is defying SCOTUS & refusing to bring him back. If we allow Trump to violate Kilmar's rights, none of our rights are safe. Kilmar is all of us.

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms “There were people who’d steal money from people. Fair enough. That was just theft. But there were people who, with one easy word, would steal the humanity from people. That was something else.”

This. Write your name in the history books on the right side of the ledger.

The president told a Central American dictator to build five more massive slave labor camps to hold US citizens.

COMPARE: the results of fighting back to the results of not fighting back

If you abduct someone and send them involuntarily and without recourse to a country where they've never lived to be imprisoned, that isn't deportation, it's human trafficking

Kind of think being cringe is the price of having a big beautiful life

AND EVEN IF THERE WERE CRIMINAL RECORDS IT WOULD STILL NOT BE OK

We need A LOT MORE PEOPLE in our groups, campaigns, doing mutual aid etc... Bring your nerdy, cringe, loser selves. Revel in being uncool. Join other people who are doing things in community [mostly quietly and without fanfare]. We need many more people.

they are segregationists, it has been obvious from the jump, and i think that pundits who dismissed the charge as hyperbolic should explain why they couldn’t see the fact pattern

If you're protesting this weekend, know your rights when interacting with law enforcement, including immigration agents.

If the courts lose jurisdiction because the government puts the prisoner in a black hole then there is no law.

West Papua’s Indigenous people have called for a boycott of KitKat, Smarties and Aero chocolate, Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, and the cosmetics brands Pantene and Herbal Essences, over alleged ecocide in their territory. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

Thurmond was the same age as Booker when he set the record Senator Cory Booker just broke. Thurmond was afforded a bathroom break and read from the encyclopedia. Booker held the floor the entire time and delivered a consistent, cogent speech for more than 24 hours. Incredible.

Something something “inside me there are two wolves”

If we’re going to find our way out of this it’s going to be through art, through love, through love that seems foolish and naive and reckless. It’s going to take a reawakening of what it means to be human, to be connected in a fearless way. This bloodless machine has to be dismantled, destroyed.

I’m really proud of my scientific societies for signing on to this letter!

Abolition was an unpopular position for a few decades. A struggle made votes for women, civil rights, marriage equality popular enough to become law. On the other hand the KKK had its popular periods. Popularity is bunk. The question is if you lead or follow.

sorry im not posting a lot. depression sucks

Stop saying “DEI hire”. Don’t repeat it when others use it. Don’t use it mockingly against those using it. Don’t use it to refer to practices that were implemented to attempt to counteract discrimination and even out the playing field. Don’t give credibility to a euphemism. Make people be specific.

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

I called all three of my republic reps today. Emphasized impacts on real people and the power of the purse argument. Encourage others to do the same.
