The effect of wind shear associated with an approaching upper trough on Tropical Cyclone Bianca.

1/2 Tomorrow, I'll be talking to Victorian high school girls at Parliament about the future opportunities, challenges and solutions in STEMM 🌏🌦🧬🧪💉🤖👽

When El Niño or La Niña doesn’t yield the west coast precip pattern you expected, look to the atmospheric rivers. They play by other “rules”…actually no rules yet. today.ucsd.edu/story/atmosp...

A less-common Eastern US Atmospheric River is currently causing deadly flooding and mudslides across multiple states. A high and low are helping to funnel warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico over the Eastern US.

Our study into why 2022 was so wet in Eastern Australia is now published (open access). This was a combined effort from 19 mostly ECRs to understand the meso, synoptic and planetary scale drivers of this remarkable year. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

It is not too late to act on climate change because climate change is not pass/fail. Every faction of a degree matters and is worth fighting for. That's not propaganda or wishful thinking. It's evidence-based. Suggesting otherwise is as unscientific as climate denial, and just as damaging.

#AustralianOpen players were lucky the tournament didn't face any 40C days this year. But with #ClimateChange, it's becoming more likely. If Monday's forecast is right, Jan 2025 will have 2 days above 40C, which used to only occur during strong El Nino years.

Kermit, the Hurricane Hunter, is flying into #StormEowyn as part of a project to improve rainfall forecasts by collecting targeted observations during atmospheric rivers www.wcrp-climate.org/gpex-overview Meanwhile, I'll be writing my DECRA which aims to test whether this could work in Australia.

Reminder that US private investment into renewables and EVs was a record $71B in Q1 of 2024 - 40% higher than Q1 of 2023.

Two weeks later. This is exactly why La Nina thresholds need to be met for multiple weeks before declaring a La Nina.

After a hiatus last year, I'm back making #weather and #climate explainers on YouTube. I'm still learning and experimenting with content and video editing, but if you enjoy these kind of explainers, please hit subscribe & share. youtu.be/e5F8HSwg9nw #scicomm #fire

This Nature paper will probably *not* get the same level of media coverage and hype as the doomsday stories…

The amount of water in the atmosphere hit a record high in 2024 with 4.9% above the 1991–2020 average. This trend heightens the potential for extreme rainfall events. Explore the Global Climate Highlights 2024 report: bit.ly/40kQpcz #C3S #GCH2024

The impact of ENSO on regional rainfall is nonlinear, which can have a severe impact on regional hydroclimate variability. In this new paper with @andrewkingclimate.bsky.social and @drjobrown.bsky.social, we assess CMIP6 models in capturing this nonlinearity - doi.org/10.1029/2024...

My first time at the #AustralianOpen and it was a total wash out, all outdoor matches suspended 😢

The BoM don't even tell us (non-BoM climate scientists) in advance if they are going to declare La Nina (trust me, I've asked) because of the risk of insider trading. For Journos to start declaring it is straight up irresponsible. theconversation.com/weather-risk...

La Niña declarations seem to pop up in the media every other week. @andrewkingclimate.bsky.social and I set the record straight. theconversation.com/la-nina-back...

Our latest Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) paper is online: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... Led by Will Rush, we looked at Atmospheric River detection in #paleoclimate experiments.

Advocating for climate change action can feel like pushing a boulder up a hill. But the doom and gloom can mean we ignore how far up we’ve climbed. So, I’ve curated a list of 7 positive #climate stories from 2024, one from each of the world’s 7 continents. pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/7-g...

Led by @cw3escripps.bsky.social and NOAA, the #AtmosphericRiver Reconnaissance program is sending aircraft into the heart of brewing storms to gather data that sharpens forecasts, helping communities prepare for what’s ahead. 💧
