Important work and coverage here by ACLU. Please support them. If US citizens are forcibly removed from their country of citizenship though it is something worse than a deportation. www.aclu.org/press-releas...

Now we have the proof that the Trump regime is indeed fascist. Arresting a judge should be the final straw for everyone to recognise that their plan is to dismantle US democracy and probably elsewhere too. AL.com had the only honest headline: www.al.com/politics/202...

The written piece gets the glory, but really editing does the heavy lifting. Today I talk about the invisible craft behind strong (academic) writing. Spoiler: It’s not the idea or insight, but it’s the revision. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/catherin...

Many European politicians are trying to attract American researchers. However, sometimes their branding doesn't match their domestic higher education policies. So I've written a guide on recent political developments in Swedish academia for prospective immigrants. joenoonan.se/post/swedish...

Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

This is a very in depth and insightful piece by @austinkocher.com on the Deportation State that Trump is building. I would just say that, while Trump has been silent on the details, he announced the broader plan loud and clear in his campaign.

Must read to understand the emerging fascists and authoritarian terror regime in the US. 👇 Do not travel to the US, Snyder shows how the president overrides fundamental constitutional rights. At what stage would the EU & member states impose sanctions on humanitarian grounds?

1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

Harvard is standing up to Trump & will not turn over control of the university to Administration diktats. Let's be clear. The Trump administration is taking a playbook from the Nazis & others who have targeted universities in a quest for absolute power. Resist. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/14/m...

Finally someone steps up

Really pleased to see the update on paternity leave take-up & detailed modelling of drivers of non-take-up. However, the basic finding that structural policy issues, mainly low wage replacement rate, contribute to the low take-up was already the main conclusion of my article: doi.org/10.1080/1322...

Today's the day! Join us at 6pm at Grand Canal Square for a cycle along Strand Road to call for safer cycling infrastructure We've been printing off a few banners in preparation - some of our own but you can also download some of @tomflood.bsky.social's great work at www.creativebyrovelo.com/shop

Yesterday I captured a Garda driving & using a mobile. Picture quality is poor, but you can see how the driving Gardai puts the mobile down & the screen goes off. He also typed. Should I report this to Garda? Ombudsman? @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social @ibike.ie @righttobikeit.bsky.social @garda.ie

“Express your support for safe cycling infrastructure” — Dublin campaign group calls on public to join cycle along Strand Road -- Cycle will start at Grand Canal Square at 6pm on Friday, 11th April 2025. The Court of Appeal is expected to issue its judgment this Friday for the case that Dublin…

While the Nazis burned critical books, today's equivalent is to erase them from the library database.

This is the literal destruction of knowledge. Mississippi libraries are being ordered to remove academic research on race and gender from library databases. mississippitoday.org/2025/04/08/m...

Hier Irland hat ein Brasilianer, der eine Messerattacke frühzeitig beenden konnte, die irische Staatsbürgerschaft bekommen. So schafft man gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt.

Academics are not save in the US anymore. Growing up in the GDR, the US and its universities were a beacon for free speech. This is now eroding rapidly and revoking a visa because an Oped is one of the first steps to an authoritarian regime www.irishtimes.com/world/us/202...

We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now

"The Harvard letter represents an outpouring of indignation from an extraordinary cross-section of the University’s faculty — and a unified demand that Harvard, which has so far been silent on the events at Columbia, take a public stand." www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

It would be helpful to see the actual signed agreement in the context of attacks by the Trump Admin on academic freedom & EDI. Can @irishtimes.com / @irishindy.bsky.social make an FOI? In France companies with US gov contracts are asked to abolish their EDI schemes www.reuters.com/world/us-war...

…and the second day already over of our conference #Socialpolicy and #Inequality in the #Polycrisis Fantastic keynote by Jackie O’Reilly - great presentations - local beer 🍻

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

I've had multiple conversations lately w/ ppl about the trust many have in the resilience of institutions (e.g. courts). I cannot stop thinking of this quote from Snyder: "the mistake is to assume that rulers who came to power through institutions cannot change or destroy those very institutions..."

BREAKING: We are suing the Trump admin on behalf of our members for unlawfully cutting off $400 million in federal funding for crucial public health research to force Columbia University to surrender its academic independence. Stay Tuned.

The Irish research community really needs a success from the merger of SFI and IRC @researchireland.bsky.social, but today's consultation event with senior academics was a farce. For an entire morning we were invited to a panel discussion, but had no chance for consultation. @kosull.bsky.social 1/3
