Of the scores of archives I’ve visited, this one haunts me the most. Like, I’ve actually had nightmares about it! 🗃️

Currently reading a book that uses abbreviated endnotes keyed to a bibliography with separate sections for newspapers, primary sources, secondary sources, and dissertations, so that looking up any reference requires leafing through more pages than I’d prefer. Footnotes, motherf*cker. Use footnotes.

I once read a review that described a volume as "one of the worst-written scholarly books of importance that I have ever read." Those are the worst. I get that not everyone writes sparkling prose, but having to plough through a truly important but poorly written book is excruciating 🗃️

I absolutely love Margot Minardi’s Making Slavery History, which is one of the best studies of slavery & memory I’ve read, but I love it even more on seeing the cover designed by Karen Horton @oupacademic.bsky.social features faux stab marks on the spine as if it were a sewn antebellum pamphlet 🗃️
