On the front line of the redundancy crisis in UK higher education: “I found myself sobbing every time I came into the office. It felt unimaginable that an intellectual project into which so many people had invested so much of their lives would simply fade away” #AcademicSky #EduSky

🚨Today, the Education Policy Institute, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, has published a new report on Identifying SEND. The report provides evidence of the inequalities that exist in SEND support across schools in England. Read the full report 👉 epi.org.uk/wp-content/u... Main findings👇

Sad news from the linguistics community: the great sociolinguist William Labov has died at age 97 languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=67399

Yesterday, we lost William Labov, a foundational figure in sociolinguistics. In his Abralin Talk, Labov reflected on a lifetime of scholarship that has mentored generations and advanced the pursuit of social equity through linguistics.

Academic Ignorance and Black Intelligence by Labov made a big impact on me. Published on The Atlantic in 1972. You can sense his generosity & conviction by making his ideas so accessible and by challenging linguists to debunk language fallacies, & y’know, racism. www.theatlantic.com/past/issues/...

there is no empirical relationship between a teacher's accent and their ability to teach. but there is a long-standing ideological relationship which frames non-dominant and non-standardised accents as signs of imagined pedagogical illegitimacy. @bjse.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

We invite submissions for the second Stuart Hall Essay Prize. The award aims to stimulate a new generation of thinkers who can offer original, lively and topical contributions to the lines of political, cultural and educational inquiry which Hall pursued. www.stuarthallfoundation.org/projects/the...

over three years we worked closely with a group of English language high school teachers who were committed to anti-deficit practices for combatting language stigma and discrimination. this article documents their efforts and describes what became possible: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

‘oracy’ is a hot topic in England’s education system. in this article i critique the deficit thinking which lies at the core of how oracy was first theorised, how those ideologies continue today, and the flawed theory of social justice which often accompanies it.🔓 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The University of Oxford has agreed to enter what it called a “long-term strategic alliance” with a foundation run by one of the world’s richest men, securing £100 million worth of investment in joint research programmes #AcademicSky #EduSky

We were delighted to welcome the education minister, Baroness Smith of Malvern, to the THE Awards ceremony in Birmingham. She praised universities “for continuing to drive innovation, for supporting our businesses and for making creative and intellectual leaps that will allow the UK to flourish”

This is the national and global contribution universities make in creating the global standing. Universities must be protected, staff must be protected, knowledge creators in all departments, fields, disciplines really must be protected. Thank you @timeshighered.bsky.social

Arguably, the #TacitDimension of #teaching is the heavy-load of teaching which society does not see, hence the status complexities, at least in #England Your thoughts #Teachers #TES #EduSky

I wonder what Hans Rosling would have done with this two-toilets (or even one in India) index of Is The Economy Good! Oh how I miss him, and kick myself for not bothering him for a handshake that one time I saw him on the subway in Stockholm 11ya! 😞 And if you don’t know Rosling, start here:
