Hi I used to work at Starbucks customer service: if you call or email about this, they are absolutely tracking those numbers, and a sufficient amount of public pushback does make them rethink shit sometimes, so now would be an EXCELLENT time to let them know they’re being ableist shitheads

PLEASE don’t buy into Amazon’s booksale this week. They are intentionally trying to eat into profits from Indie Bookstore Day this weekend, a really important annual event for our important community institutions. Check out your local fave or bookshop.org.

One for your diary: Kathleen Hughes Memorial Lecture by David Stifter "Linguistic Contributions to a Model for the Celticisation of the Western Archipelago" Thursday 8 May, 17:00 Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, University of Cambridge Register at: www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/news/event/8...

Still Out-of-Office We are not currently at work due to taking part in strike action called by Unite, the trade union for UCU staff, over our Campaign for a Safe & Professional Workplace Culture. Our strikes this week run for 3 days from 23 to 25 April. #UniteVoices

🧵Confirmation via a friend: Starbucks will forbid employees from masking without a medical note. Giant US-based MAGAcorp known for union-busting, actively preventing workers from protecting themselves and the public from known workplace health hazards? Starbucks wants you infected. 👉 #Sickbucks 👈

GlossIT is hiring a Digital Humanities postdoctoral researcher for 4 years (75% FTE). Candidates should have experience with digital editions and philological/linguistical projects: jobs.uni-graz.at/en/jobs/9a9b... Position from 1 June 2025 (starting date negotiable). Deadline is 12 May 2025.

Our new temporary exhibition is now open! If you’re in Edinburgh between now and Easter 2026, do come along to Surgeons’ Hall to learn all about the history of women in surgery.

They will tell you that this virus is a dangerous bioweapon that escaped from a laboratory, but if they see you taking any steps to protect yourself from this virus they will tell you that this virus is really just a cold.

📣New Blog! Who were the women poets, scholars, editors, and translators shaping Ruaraidh Erskine’s Gaelic magazines? 🖋️Find out in a new blog from @poncarova.bsky.social 📚 Read now: womenshistoryscotland.org/2025/04/21/w... #WomensHistory #ScotHist #Herstory #GaelicCulture #womenmakehistory

Another reminder: Respiratory infections spread mainly through the air. That’s why they affect the lungs. Masks, worn correctly and consistently, reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Respirators work better than masks. Washing hands isn’t wrong, but it won’t stop airborne transmission.

The Pope literally used one of his last moments on Earth to scold JD Vance for his unchristian policies towards migrants and refugees. This lapsed catholic appreciates that more than I can verbalize. The people running our country are evil.

New study by PolyBio shows significant biological changes after a Covid infection. These changes can impact metabolic, vascular & immune system. They also found cancer associated epigenetic changes. Well worth a read, and a good reminder to mask back up!

A glimpse of the covers of our forthcoming US edition of Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage, each incorporating a portion of detailed map of London in 1895. It will be available only as a set and exclusively from @asterismbooks.bsky.social by the end of September 2025.

'when AI generates summaries, students bypass the cognitive engagement required to actively interpret academic work. It is precisely this engagement – the effort to comprehend, synthesise and relate ideas – that catalyses learning.' 1/3

Pope Francis has died this morning at the age of 88. His final message, on Easter Sunday, called for an end to “deplorable” violence in Gaza, Sudan and around the world www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news...

Excellent coverage here from CBS. We are so close to a bird flu Pandemic. We must bring in border screening and #Cleantheair urgently. Without full transparency on covid is airborne we are lost! www.cbsnews.com/news/bird-fl...

The moral of the story is this: do not experiment on yourself by snorting airborne viruses into your brain. Stay in the control group.

“New preprint study reveals profound and long-lasting biological disruptions that can follow a SARS-CoV-2 infection, including changes connected to altered metabolism and cancer-associated epigenetic changes.” polybio.org/polybio-supp...

Women's appearance and behaviour is about to get even more highly policed in the UK, with a few people doubtless being emboldened to "take action". This whole billionaire-funded enterprise dials back gender equity by decades.

"Profound metabolic and immune alterations at the proteomic, cellular, and epigenetic level." SARS-CoV-2 infection can trigger persistent immune dysfunction, which is an hallmark of #LongCovid in the study sample Lucena Lage et al 2025, preprint

To me Rowling exists entirely outside of the “should we support/work with artists with troubling views?” debate. She doesn’t just *think* her opinions, she doesn’t just *say* them, she’s a relentless 24-7 activist whose whole mission in life is terrorizing trans people.

Hamilton Spectator: 'When we stop talking about COVID-19, policymakers can stop caring' 'Calling COVID-19 “over” is factually incorrect and a form of gaslighting when about 15 percent of infections lead to long COVID' www.thespec.com/opinion/cont...

Imagine basing so much of your public identity on your adult conversion to Catholicism, only to be publicly dismissed by the actual Catholic hierarchy.

For those who celebrate: may your #Easter weekend be as strange and random as this vintage postcard.

Every breath we take at work should be safe. This petition demands the UK government take airborne viruses seriously—by putting legal duties on employers. 👉 petition.parliament.... #CleanAir4All #WorkplaceHealth #LegalChange

2 petitions. Govt will probably ignore, but let's get numbers up anyway. Legally enshrine the right of adults to physically transition using NHS services - petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... Allow transgender people to self-identify their legal gender - petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

As a Scottish cis woman, 'For Women' Scotland do not speak for me. Trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are women's rights. (the tiny pink dot in the right foreground is one of my @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social colleagues' hats; our branch & several others were bannerless but well represented).

breaking my lenten vow but for a good reason - the final crowdfunder for student A. People across the world helped A re-enrol for 2nd and 3rd year at uni after their financial backing fell through, nightmarishly, at the end of 1st year... www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-a-gra...

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Just some basic fact-checking would be nice. Anyway, I wrote about Eostre here: florencehrs.substack.com/p/eostre-pag...

The Covid pandemic is one of the most devastating public health failures in history. It's also one of the deadliest pandemics, especially if we think of the death toll and morbidity (Long Covid) in the context of modern medicine. Even with the tools we have, Covid keeps killing

Numbers are huge at the trans rights march and demo in Edinburgh. Good to see loads of @ucu.org.uk comrades here.

Things I learned recently: * Edinburgh’s seaweed is collected and dumped in landfill because it is too contaminated with wet wipes to be composted. * Most packaging labelled ‘compostable’ is not usually compostable.

Interesting. Another way Covid may contribute to cancer or worsening cancer is by causing diabetes "Diabetes is known to dysregulate both innate and adaptive immune responses" id.elsevier.com/as/authoriza...

If you think the pandemic you can’t remember was traumatic, try being one of the few who knows we’re still in one while everyone else pretends it’s over. #COVID #WearAnN95

"In an earlier post, she wrote: "As for the inevitable death, if I die, I want a loud death, I don't want me in a breaking news story, nor in a number with a group, I want a death that is heard by the world, a trace that lasts forever, and immortal images that neither time nor place can bury."

Not only this — and this is a big deal — but how on earth will the police ensure that male officers won’t be allowed to search cis women who look a bit butch and can’t prove they’re women?
