If you pick A, please let me know if you ever need a guest contributor! My husband and bff are teachers in separate districts so at least twice a week I want to burn it all down (even more so than when I left the classroom to get my PhD in 2015)

Daycare is more than my mortgage.
Yes, really.
And I'm one of the few millennials who got into the housing market and found daycare. Most aren't so lucky.

Nowhere I go are people wearing masks. They've given up on it despite COVID being back up at the top in terms of infection rates.
Sure, you might be fine because you're vaccinated, but my infant won't be! No care for our neighbor anymore.

The company that made the new RSV vaccine for babies didn't make enough so now it's like parents have to engage in Hunger Games-esque battle for the small supply.
Why is infant health supported by one company? Why don't we have a nationwide vaccine rollout?

We have to keep dog pee pads in our diaper bag because there are often no surfaces besides the floor where we can change her.
Often these don't have hooks to hang your purse or diaper bag so you can get even more bathroom shoe germs.

Follow along as I give examples of how existing is so much harder than it needs to be here.
Starting us off, why don't all bathrooms have a changing table?
Why aren't there separate feeding rooms?
We need baby stations like in Japan!

Even giving them the benefit of the doubt on the difficulty of getting any national policy accomplished, there would be millions more daily actions showing they cared.
But no. Our society hates children and their parents. I heard this before having a kid but now I see the proof everywhere...

Yeah I feel like the power of AI would be to have program officers upload reviewer comments into AI to have them be turned from "how dare you, lowly garbage" tone into "not bad! Shows promise, just not this year" tone

From the state and won't even move back despite 1) we have a new baby and all of our family is there and 2) my job wouldn't even have to change as I can be fully remote.
That's how bad the state is rn

I've noticed the ads I get for skincare have gone through the roof in my 30s. So many serums and creams and masks while my husband maybe gets an ad once a year for beard oil. π«

UGH I am sorry. I'm on a new one that might not work because the one that does isn't covered despite all the things. It shouldn't be like this. We don't have energy for this!!

I'm thankful that I have a flexible job, understanding family, and tons of economic, educational, and racial privilege to help make it suck less. Still, this country has a long way to go to improve the lives with chronic illness. Thanks for letting me rant. βΊοΈ

8. Maintaining at home care. I have to watch my food, exercise, physical therapy, mental health tasks, non-prescription items (e.g. pain reliever, the right bath soak), and ensure my environment doesn't make things worse. These mostly happen daily and require a running to do list.

7. Staying up to date. Science updates but doctors don't always so I have Google Scholar alerts for publications, read books every year, check medical association recommendations... As I'm not a medical doctor this takes longer than I'd like.

6. Finding extra care. Based on 5, gaslighting takes a toll on mental health and needing therapy for this. And social groups of people who get it. And educating friends and loved ones on how they can support you (hard when you don't even know yourself).

5. Finding care. It took almost 30 years to get diagnosed with Endo and I estimate a dozen doctors telling me it was normal before I found one who listened. Now imagine this for multiple conditions.

4. Getting medications and refills. Depending on drug and pharmacy and insurance and prescription, these don't auto-refill. Tracking and calling and setting up my pillbox for the month takes time and so much mental energy.

3. Synthesizing info. None of my doctors talk or share notes so they work in silos. I have to look up whether comorbidities are common or caused by medications / prescribed activities. If I can't figure it out, I have to lay this history at every. single. appointment (getting charged more ofc).

2. Dealing with insurance. Don't think I need to explain this but appeals take hours and days and then months to resolve (best case scenario).

1. Seeing specialists. Specialists aren't in every city & they have months and months before you can see them meaning we spend hours on the road and often call multiple times to see if there's been a cancellation. These factors mean you can't book two appointments out of town for the same day.

Maybe it's because I'm so early career but I've also felt a lot of C) I don't care that you're doing something similar.
My skeptical side feels it's more of a "I'm already at the top" or "doubt it's any good" or "I'll just keep citing my friends thanks" π
Discouraging nonetheless!

Hate to admit I love the Cormorant Strike series by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling) but I recently also liked Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister and coming for the other recs here π
