"LLMs do not distinguish between fact & fiction. They are not designed to tell the truth. They are designed to persuade, yet they are implemented in sectors where truth & detail matter, e.g. education, science, health, the media, law, & finance." I have started posting videos of quotes from the brave mothers interviewed as part of different studies and sharing these resources. We start with England a legal system where you can still be found guilty of contempt of court for speaking about your experience. #metoofamilycourt

I have just received an email, which states: “We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to publish a feature paper in our journal *free of charge*” (their emphasis). Hilarious.

📍 Research shows that violence is concentrated in a small number of places. In England & Wales, 50% of violent crime happens in just 2% of locations - 'hotspots'. That’s why targeting resources where violence happens most makes sense. youthendowmentfund.org.uk/reports/key-... #KeyFactsAboutViolence

I hadn't previously seen this ONS publication of new data on the prevalence of domestic abuse, based on new Crime Survey Qs. Among the detail, 9.5% of women and 6.5% of men experienced DA in the year to March 2024 - much higher than previous estimates (6.6% and 3.0%). www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...

Someone who’s been convicted of violent offences — especially intimate partner violence — should not be allowed to own a gun. My government will automatically revoke their licences.

As part of our ECR Development Fund, we funded @rutternik.bsky.social @durham-university.bsky.social to lead a project that identified non-harmful routes to support for families living with child-to-parent violence and abuse. Read the summary below 👇 vulnerabilitypolicing.org.uk/when-it-hurt...

🧵1/3 💔 #Suicide is now the leading cause of death in #DomesticAbuse cases. In the last year, 98 people died by suicide following abuse—outnumbering intimate partner homicides. We need to confront this reality. And we need to act.

If you’re writing for a US journal that uses APA referencing, but you’re more familiar with Harvard, don’t use Harvard for your 10k article thinking that it’s similar & you’ll change your refs to APA quickly at the end. I’ve spent all day doing this, and I’m not yet half way through. #academicwoes

Today sees the start of Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week. The theme for the week/World Down Syndrome Day (21/3) is #ImproveOurSupportSystems This is a call for action to improve the support that people who have Down syndrome receive - to give individuals more choice, control & dignity in their lives.

The only official guide for practitiiners was published in 2015 & is now very dated. We know so much more about CAPVA now. A revised guide was due to accompany the DA Act 2021. It’s now 2025, services are patchy, and families are still struggling. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I'd put it the other way round. Scientific method, as a human practice, is intrinsically value laden. What you choose to investigate, what you decide to measure, how you measure, what you ignore, how you deal with uncomfortable results, even who you allow to do it, are all soaked in values.

A very distressing C4 report tonight on pregnant women prisoners being handcuffed during childbirth, despite it being against MoJ policy. Those policies aren’t worth the paper they’re written on — the only way to keep pregnant women safe is to stop sending them to prison.
