Starting your own business involves a lot of upskilling. And sometimes that upskilling is frustrating. So if anyone can help me figure out why I can’t connect my squarespace website and domain, I’d be grateful for some advice!

Being an advocate for yourself can be a really important task as a patient, but how to do it can be tricky. www.instagram.com/reel/DGUMzaW...

Kristen Pecanac and I are organising a panel submission for the International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA2026), title "Social interactions where death is relevant: Across settings and around the world" Please contact me if you would like to make a contribution: [email protected]

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

And no, I didn’t go to hospital for content either! But if you are interested in communication, here’s something I wrote for emergency doctors a few years ago: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

A little story. Very recently I had a little trip to ED (all ok). I’d already mentioned that I work in healthcare communication and had a short chat about it with the doctor. Close to discharge, the doctor asked where I was working to ascertain whether I needed a medical certificate. 1/2

Excellent article from Julia Baird: “sometimes the cleverest of doctors can be the worst communicators” www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Apparently there aren’t many language teachers in NSW at the moment. Maybe there’s a place for learning about how language and conversation work in real life? #InterpersonalSkills #education

Conversation as a craft - for the full explainer (less than 3 mins long), check it out here: youtu.be/VXRyNWjFANw?...

“When will thought become eloquent, and my brain like a gushing stream ?” - Walter White, 1837

All the talk about the Royal Society put it in my mind to read the Journals of Walter White, the once assistant secretary of the Royal Society and my great x 4(?) grandfather.

The success of which is so dependent on effective communication with patients.

Looks like National Lampoon beat me to it in 1972 (a clipping my dad kept during his time in med school!)

Looking for CPD that helps you learn about the anatomy of conversation? Check out our mini-course, An Introduction to Conversation, which is now listed in the Australian Medical Association cpdhome catalogue www.cpdhome.org.au/catalogue/An... #medsky #communication

Going through some of my medical history and re-discovered some scans after a trip to emergency for a concussion a bit over a decade ago. I have zero recollection of this occurring. And it wasn’t even a bad concussion. Makes me wonder what else I’m forgetting.

And then via aviation to safety in healthcare.

2 of 3 reviewers on my interpretive qualitative paper want intercoder reliability tests, random sample to prevent selection bias, tables w/counts, comparison to those not interviewed, & generalizability. If you are NOT qualified to review qualitative research, please say no to the journal's request.

Excited to announce that this course has been accredited by ACRRM for CPD. It's 1 hour of activities - watching videos, completing quiz questions, and reflecting - and costs only $30!

Just released! I've taken the plunge into creating online, self-directed mini courses through my business, Bedside Manners Pty Ltd. Here's the first one: sarah-s-site-3633.thinkific.com/courses/my-c...

Yep, when you hear that mining is huge, remember they mean the profits are huge... The Hospitality industry pays more wages to Australians than does mining.

Love that others have also seen vibes in qualitative research. I used this framing in a workshop about engaging novices in CA at DMCA in 2022 following some great chats on Twitter with @joshuaraclaw.com

I make pretty good scones and Anzac biscuits and went down a rabbit hole looking at the rules of the Royal Easter Show to see if I could enter! Since discovered there’s no Anzac biscuit category!

Mandatory re-post every time. Applies to this and the Tom Holland lip sync clip.

“‘It’s very easy to assume that science is going to change organically towards equality — and what this study shows is that that’s not happening…It is an ‘important reminder for us that we need to stay vigilant in working towards equality in science’” @crsugimoto.bsky.social 🧪 #AcademicSky 👩🏽‍🔬

Shout out to the only healthcare provider across two hospitals that asked mine or my husband’s name on a recent visit with one of our kids. Besides that though, some really great care, clear communication of uncertainty, and even apologies for delays!

We're only ten days into 2025 & already 40 people in aged care homes have died from COVID. The answer is so clear: clean the air, test staff & give them paid sick leave, test visitors before entry, enforce mask wearing. None of this is rocket science ... We just don't seem to care enough 🤷

Check me out on Instagram! Sharing lots of the same things, more focused on the science of conversation plus more pictures :)

Research is rarely a straight forward process. It is important to reflect on the methods we use to interrogate different analytic questions, both during the research and after it is completed. We came across several methodological challenges during our research into lifestyle talk.
