Happy to be in beautiful Bristol today to present our work on symbolic policies and climate policy support. Great workshop organised by @psaenvironmental.bsky.social, @environmentalpol.bsky.social, @psaepop.bsky.social and @jeppjournal.bsky.social. Agenda: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/workshop-e...

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

How has climate change scepticism in media coverage changed since 2014? 📍 Denial that it’s happening - DOWN from 2️⃣0️⃣% to 5️⃣% 📍 Attack on science - DOWN from 2️⃣0️⃣% to 1️⃣% 📍 Attack on policies - MARGINALLY UP from 2️⃣3️⃣% to 2️⃣4️⃣% bit.ly/4gR9poF

I’ve an op-ed in the Guardian on pro-wrestling, politics & Donald Trump, of course. The idea pro-wrestling helps explain Trump is well established. Hopefully my point that ‘keeping #Kayfabe’ is becoming the norm in professionalised politics offers something new: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Really enjoyed this episode about climate justice in universities, with @profjohnbarry.bsky.social and @jenniecstephens.bsky.social Loved John's point about finding hope and joy in climate action, very different from optimism without agency. Hope requires urgency and action #SpeirGorm #Climate

Sign up for the online roundtable on 'reflections on and beyond #COP29: Prospects of global #climate governance', with some excellent researchers, practitioners and thinkers. 4 December, 10:00-11:30 CET www.greendealnet.eu/Reflections-... @jenirisallan.bsky.social @oberthuerseb.bsky.social

So, #COP29 has approved $300 billion USD annually of climate funding to support countries severely impacted by climate change. We spend $310 billion USD annually on luxury goods, $250 billion on tobacco, $2,400 billion on military expenditure, and ~$6,000 billion in subsidies for petrochemicals....

If you see the atmosphere as a commons - a natural wealth for everyone to access equitably and sustainably - then it's not hard to see how deeply unjust the #COP29 $300bn per year goal from industrialised countries is, when historical responsibilities for excess emissions are taken into account. 1/

"5x 1-year postdocs on environmental humanities, drawn from any humanistic discipline, broadly interpreted to include all parts of world & historical eras... incl. but not limited to humanistic approaches to climate change, biodiversity,& environmental justice" #philsci #histsci #envhum #envhist

This is an excellent synopsis of the pros and esp. cons of the UK REF. However it perpetuates one myth (suggesting that only international, not national impact case studies can be scored at 4*) & in so doing points to another serious cost & flaw in the system: the high level of misinformation 1/2

(1/27) STARTER PACK THREAD. The environmental humanities, broadly conceived, have been flourishing on BlueSky lately. To further promote this growth, we recommend the following starter packs in and beyond the #EnvHum, beginning with ICEHO's for environmental history. Let's connect! #envhist

This is such an important point. Environmentalist discourse is diverse and heterogenous; there are often major differences within groups and even between individuals who tend to be lumped together (eg as ‘doomers’). But it suits some agendas to paint a much more simplistic picture.

We could have the best climate science in the world: but without action, solutions won’t happen; and solutions won't help, if they don’t make the world a better place. That's why my new starter pack features 101 experts in climate policy, law, economics, strategy--and justice. Check it out! 🌏🧪

Pleased to share my new article on the value of reading climate fiction as political theory. I argue that this helps to enrich and decolonise our ecopolitical imaginaries and the ways we envision just sustainable futures. doi.org/10.1016/j.fu...

Crucially, the idea that net zero would halt global warming relies on the fact that natural carbon sinks continue to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This removal of this CO2 is classed as a natural process & is therefore not [counted as human activity] www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Looking forward to our conference kicking off tomorrow in Cambridge. It promises to be the intellectual stimulation we all need to dispel the early January gloom. 😊

Has a reviewer ever made you chuckle? Working on R&R can be challenging, even demoralising. Thankfully some brilliant colleagues out there know how to say “you can do better than this” without being offensive or discouraging.

Absolute 🔥 this. 'It has been recently suggested that universities, as they currently exist, are not fit for purpose in a time of planetary emergency, and there is a desperate need to develop alternative approaches.' 'There is no research on a dead planet.' www.frontiersin.org/articles/10....
