i think this is exactly right. a lot of my poor predictions tend to be rooted in a stale assumption that the academy is fundamentally american. but the outreach efforts of the last several years have globalized its membership. hence PARASITE, EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE, ANORA… bsky.app/profile/812f...

that’s a wrap! i watched 47/50 nominees. the holdouts were: - THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT - ELTON JOHN: NEVER TOO LATE - DEATH BY NUMBERS the first 2 are nominated only for best song, and i’ve learned my lesson to avoid those. the last isn’t streamable, and life is hard enough right now, you know?

last nominee for the season is THE ONLY GIRL IN THE ORCHESTRA, a slightly muddled but sincerely loving portrait of a vivacious artist.

one of my very favorites from last year, absolutely lovely! like taking a deep breath.

3 documentary shorts down: - I AM READY, WARDEN. can’t put my finger on why, but this felt insincere somehow. - INCIDENT might be a stretch to classify as a documentary, but it’s terrific, important journalism nonetheless. - INSTRUMENTS OF A BEATING HEART is charming as hell. only 4 nominees left!

(be forewarned that i don’t plan to watch ALL of them, there are a few that are more trouble than they’re worth, but i’ll still get pretty damn close)

followed that up with the live action shorts, which are always a heavy affair. thankfully the absurd black comedy of I’M NOT A ROBOT serves as an antidote. down to 7, single digits!

caught the remaining animated shorts this weekend, and feel compelled to call out MAGIC CANDIES as a unique delight. 12 to go!
