Honorable mention for Kim Stanley Robinson, who has spent most of his life in Davis.

Octavia Butler is also an amazing writer, up there with the all-time sci-fi greats and I’d probably put her ahead of LeGuin in pure creativity. Does she count as a Californian?

I think there’s a story here too about Abram Petrovich Gannibal. Sold into slavery and eventually ending up in Russia and through his intelligence, became a famous general and a titled noble. Also he’s Alexander Pushkin’s great-grandfather.

Another, arguably more creative, Californian.

She voted for the Iraq War. Should be immediately disqualifying.

True. I cringe when I remember that my younger self voted for Hillary “Super Predators” Clinton.

I’m open to good faith implementation ideas on how to build it faster or cheaper, but I know that they are ideologically opposed to public projects in general and don’t believe that climate change is real.

If, pick a leftist org, had even a fraction of the funding and institutional support of this rump, zero constituency outside of Fairfax County and Manhattan, anti-Trump conservatives, we would have full communism in a month.

I keep on hoping that Elon’s ket dealer gets a little careless with their “secret sauce” or mixes up the powders.

The good news is that we live in a hyper state of simultaneous woke and unwokeness. If it’s something they don’t like happening, it’s because not enough woke has been removed and if it’s something they like, it’s the direct result of their god-king returning.

TBF we live in a largely scam based economy.

My other theory is that if material conditions are generally getting worse, people are perpetually nostalgic for 8 or so years ago.

Did everyone just forget that he was president before and was bad at it?
comment in response to

I’m a veteran of r/politicalcompassmemes, they do it all the time. Point to any historical example of something bad happening and they’ll do some version of this.

That wasn’t real conservatism/capitalism/MAGA/libertarianism, real conservatism/capitalism/MAGA/libertarianism has never been tried.

I’m all for rooting for the home team and wanting what’s best for your neighbors, but America as a concept is pretty much cooked at this point.

The next president should pardon anyone who splashes just a little bit too much fent in with his ketamine.

elon's reached the neglectful father era of lowtaxing, we might be on pace for something spectacular indeed.

I don’t think he’s on that many drugs. I think he’s actually really bad at taking drugs and can only do a paltry amount of them. Everyone should tell him that he’s as bad a drug taker as he is at video games.

Politics are 0.000002% better in Canada than in the USA and they will never shut up about it.

“Listen, it’s going to have rails but they’re like individual pods, not a long line of cars connected to eachother.”
“So trains but worse?”
comment in response to

“Are you doing cars or trains?”
“No, I’m doing a special, secret third thing.”
comment in response to

The whole “doing trains but in depressurized tubes” idea is not a new idea by any means and Musk didn’t come up with it. It was never pursued because it’s an engineering and safety nightmare.

His solution was just one more lane but underground with his death trap cars.

I heard a theory that white, liberal Boomers like him because he’s the Millennial son they wish they had.
Other than them and Foamers, I don’t see much of a base of support.

He is *relatively* good on this specific issue and nothing else.

I am open to any good faith alternatives for implementing it within the parameters of the original ballot measure but their alternatives will probably be “let’s just do a bus” or “one more lane”.

Well, she shouldn’t risk alienating petit bourgeois Long Island Guidos who would never vote for a Democrat in a million years.
comment in response to

The vast majority of people’s interaction with politics is primarily from legacy media, which deliberately lumps social democrats in with neoliberals as “liberals”. We can work with soc dems, it’s not a huge leap from soc dem to socialist.
comment in response to
post
+80% of the most strident leftists on here were social democrats less than five years ago.
comment in response to

I always got a “capitalism is can be bad and is necessary but we can control them” kind of vibe from SocDems. Once it’s clear that the latter isn’t true, the rest falls into place.
comment in response to
post
He sounds like a SocDem. We don’t have to needlessly antagonize them, just excise them from Neoliberals.
