Bronwen is excavating one of the few Iron Age postholes at #Durotriges25 It contains a near complete (if broken) Iron Age pot She is happy (and so are we) 😊 πŸ‘

We're not satisfied that the #Durotriges25 trench is quite big enough Cameron and Billy are currently extending it There are archaeological features escaping from the north east edge of the excavation and we hope to locate and dig them all We have 2 weeks left 😲

Edie has finished excavating a quarter section of an Iron Age pit, one of many intercutting features at the north end of the #Durotriges25 trench She is understandably happy (and so are we) πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

John has found a curious deposit of partially articulated animal bone at the base of an Iron Age pit We don't know what animal it is yet We also can't yet tell if he's happy (John, that is) #Durotriges25

Ian and Sue have started excavating the big blobby blob feature at the end of Trench M at #Durotriges25 We still don't know what is is But it's got lots of flint in it... πŸ€”

New section of ditch to work on. Did look like two separate cuts early on, but that soon disappeared, as did the little spread of puddled chalk across the centre.

Louisa has two bone recovery experts visiting her at #Durotriges25 Not sure what their context recording skills are like πŸ€”

Lorraine has joined the Sunshade Brigade at #Durotriges25 Time to bring artificial darkness to the archaeology!

After a brief pause in comms (key elements of our recording kit at #Durotriges25 melted β˜€οΈπŸ₯΅πŸ”₯) we're back! Did you miss us?* (*don't answer that πŸ˜†) Here's the wiggly Bronze Age ditch in Trench M to make amends for our brief absence πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

β€œI like big pots and I cannot lie”

With huge apologies for this, the last annoying #Durotriges25 earworm So, where were we? Oh yes Movin to the country Gonna dig a lotta ditches

Excavating at Great Humphreys in the 1980s. Richard Balley and I are struggling with the frame for the polytunnel in the background. The ditch we were excavating is an Iron Age enclosure ditch. #archaeology #hertfordshire #IronAge @durotrigesdig.bsky.social

Sarah has found a Late Iron Age midden deposit, containing quite a lot of pottery, in the upper levels of her ditch section She is happy 😊 #Durotriges25

Mike has discovered the semi articulated remains of a cow at the base of his Iron Age pit at #Durotriges25 He is happy 😊

Barnaby, improvising sound recording on site at #Durotriges25, proving, in the words of singer songwriter Sade that there's; "No need to ask He's a boom operator"

Hmmm...the first stage in cult initiation is the donning of the robes... Looking forward to my visit enormously ❀️

Life's a ditch A lovely Early Iron Age ditch #Durotriges25

An unusual find from our predominantly Iron Age site is this fragment of polished Neolithic axe which Jo has recovered from the top of a ditch section Nice 🀩 #Durotriges25
