I see kindergarten incorrectly capitalized all the time... Do people think it's cap because we say pre-K and K-12? Or because it's a German word? Or just another casualty of general overcapitalization?

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

There's nothing sweeter than a little Valentine's Day #etymology! Valentine's Day itself is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who was thought to have performed marriages for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. All 8 words are on my Instagram. #wordnerd #valentinesday #languagehistory

If we’re renaming bodies of water based on petty grievances, I propose that this be renamed the Kendrick Lamar passage.

I just spotted a comma accidentally set in italics in a .pdf. That means I get to hang up my editing hat for the day, right? #amediting

The 2nd edition of Elements of Indigenous Style is here! Originally authored by IEA founder Dr. Gregory Younging, now lead edited by Warren Cariou. A must-read for anyone writing aiming to learn more about respectful representation. Buy it via Amazon, Brush Education, GoodMinds, or UTP.

Email from Ingram: “some book prices will go up. Some will go down.” Unspoken: books are going to be more expensive. Ingram is the primary printer and distributor for bookstores and libraries. They do both indie and trad pub. Expect delays and expense. Support authors and bookstores and libraries.

Removing this from its original context today so as to avoid turning it into a dunk, but for the thousandth time: The word "till" in the sense of "until" predates the word "until" by a century and has been in regular use for a millennium, give or take. It's not an abbreviation; it's a word.

New on the Guild Blog: @editorbeth.bsky.social shares how she helped two of her clients update their house style to reflect changes in CMOS 18, and why you might consider offering this service to your clients too. www.edsguild.org/blog/helping... #Editing #AmEditing

And now for an adorable photo of my adorable cat.

My takeaways from the #authorsagainstbookbans town hall for publishing professionals, as a freelance copyeditor: Any scope creep into altering or removing content that may "alienate audiences" or attract bans is unacceptable, and yet keeping authors' personal safety at the forefront is so important.

'The new guidelines say that AI prompts currently don’t offer enough control to “make users of an AI system the authors of the output.” (AI systems themselves can’t hold copyrights.)' www.theverge.com/news/602096/...

The part of your brain the creates and the part of your brain that edits are different. When you edit while writing, you switch your mode of thinking and can gum up the works, so to speak, knocking yourself out of your groove. Correct obvious mistakes, but knock out your pages and edit them after.

Philosopher Mark Kingwell speaks to the Toronto Star about his new book "Question Authority" and the causes and costs of our era of distrust and whether we can learn to repair it. www.thestar.com/opinion/star...

The idiom "taking something at face value" dates back to the 1850s and has evolved over time to indicate the general concept of accepting something as true without questioning it, even if it may be untrue! #amediting #bookcopyeditor #englishgrammar

To hold cards close to the chest or close to the vest? Which one do you think is preferred? Or are they truly both acceptable? From what I can tell online, it seems both versions arose around the same time in the early 20th century, always referencing poker. #amediting #idiom #wordnerd

Q. Can I change “%” to “percent” in quoted text? Q. Is it wrong to put a space before a question mark? Q. How would I include an ISBN in a source citation for a book? We answer these and other questions about Chicago style in the January Q&A at CMOS Online. Check it out at cmos.style/QandA

It was four years ago, almost to the hour, that I sent the pitch to @biblioasis.bsky.social for what would become The Least We Can Do www.portersquarebooks.com/book/9781771... & The Art of Libromancy www.portersquarebooks.com/book/9781771... One the one hand...

Went Christmas shopping at my local bookstore. Bought four books to gift. Bought three for myself. 🫣😂 #booksky #bookstore #shoplocal #indiebookstore

Looking up so many words while copyediting always brings me interesting tidbits of information. Today's horrifying tidbit: Another term for strep throat is septic sore throat. Yuck!! #amediting #edibuddies

Finished a project last week! And this is one where I'm particularly impatient to get the printed version in my hands 😊😊 #amediting #edibuddies #bookproofreader

My approach to posting online book reviews: describe the reading experience (fast pace, tense), the type of reader it appeals to (cozy, philosopical), and whether I think the author achieved what they set out to achieve (meant to be insightful but lacked depth). #booksky #bookreviews #indieauthor

The Authors Guild believes it is crucial that authors, not publishers or tech companies, have control over the licensing of AI rights. AI training is NOT publishing, and a publishing contract does not in any way grant that right. Read our statement: authorsguild.org/news/ai-lice...
