Randy Barnett wrote a whole book, The Original Meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment, in which he advanced none of these pseudo-historical cherry-picked out-of-context claims and instead dismissed them as irrelevant, acknowledging them only in passing with "This view has been fiercely criticized."

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

Thanks, Paul, for pointing to this. Am going to do a thing I rarely do, which is post without footnotes! Three points: 1. The way to defund the humanities has always been through de-legitimizing the value of humanities research and teaching. Not new, but an accumulating menace . 1/

How did the Reconstruction Amendments affect the mobility + citizenship of Black Americans, Native Americans, Chinese immigrants, & European immigrants? In a crisp 28 pages, I explain. Last & final article before the full book is out in 2026. @gracemallon.bsky.social @conniethomas.bsky.social

Scotten was a Kavanaugh (DC Cir) and Roberts clerk ...

Alternative WSJ headline: "Cherokees Relocated, Why Can't Gazans?"

My President's Day blitz begins with an op-ed in Newsweek: Trump's obsession with Obama's origins was never about citizenship. It was a calculated effort to delegitimize the first Black president by exploiting deep-seated prejudices.

if you thought archives were problematic, wait till you see no archives

Fascism is the politics that sacrifices everything to the unity and rule of the blood-defined class: racial capitalism with few restraints. It is always complaining about borders even as it occupies others’ lands, and it is ever identifying enemies, foreign and domestic. @dwaldstreicher.bsky.social

Elon Musk spent over $280 million to elect Trump and his GOP allies. Now Musk is collecting on that investment—grabbing control of the system that gets your grandpa his Social Security check, pays your mom’s doctor through Medicare, and keeps your kid’s Head Start center open.

(still) here for dad-reader punny titles.

Why is this so hard, @nytimes.com?

Perhaps if he had not spent so much time playing video games so that he could be the #1 video game player he would know that the answer to this question is "All of them."

So these dudes just pushed past security? And folks are unable to physically remove them? These dudes?

This is what we need. Thank you, @repstansbury.bsky.social

I know everything is chaotic, which makes it difficult to reflect, but I'd like to draw your attention to this from @jamellebouie.net. We're in a nation-defining constitutional crisis caused by the failure of the "liberal consensus," which has existed since the 1930s. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

if you report on "privatizing" NOAA its important to make clear that the private sector simply cannot replicate the data collection and modeling services performed by NOAA. They don't want to run it in the private sector, they want to paywall it so they can sell you something your taxes paid for

Why target USAID when it’s <1% of budget? “USAID funds democracy-promotion programs around the world, including in European countries where right-wing populist movements are thriving. Musk has become an ally of those movements, some of whose leaders have specifically targeted the agency…” Gift link

Everyone should read this

It’s so sick that the Harris campaign landed on a one-in-a-million political communicator and immediately muzzled him so they could bring out Liz Cheney

DEI ate my homework.

"DEI" the new Willie Horton. racism again an infinitely renewable political resource proving the need for something we won't be able to call DEI

My book, out in 2026 on America's 250th birthday, is a retelling of US migration policy history. The intervention is my addition of Native & African American history. How did slavery & Native dispossession influence voluntary US migration laws/policies? It is most unpleasant but based on evidence.

Jamelle Bouie, always. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/29/o...

This this this. I teach creative writing, which is *why* I’ve been talking about the news w/ my students. This is what we talk about when talk about cliche, the way it can collapse & erase meaning. Don’t just accept the words you’re given. Find the words you need.

i keep saying these people hate the american system of government because it is true. “sovereign over the executive branch?” get the fuck outta here. he is a servant of the constitution and those “rogue judges” are doing their jobs!

Reminder that our skinhead, fake working class, Harvard educated, construction-site-sweatshirt cosplaying loser of a Trump supporting senator @fetterman.senate.gov supports the legislation @aoc.bsky.social is speaking against. Good for her. m.youtube.com/watch?v=UGbQ...

A straightforward call for ethnic cleansing from the US president

There it is.

Unrelatedly, Harvard just fired everyone in their slavery legacy program.

Unlike Jonathan Greenblatt, I was raised to know a Nazi gesture when i see one. And not to lie. Don't know what Jewish century he's from, but it isn't the 20th.

Can you imagine a Republican pundit posting this?

If you want to read a new book coming out but don't want to buy it, a great thing you can do is ask your local library to order it. The more requests they get, the more likely they are to acquire it and then lots of people will get to read it who othewise wouldn't.

The impact of what Elon Musk did is a Nazi salute. Historians of fascism and Nazism are telling us... with their expertise. Neo-Nazis and white supremacists are telling us this with their glee...." www.heyalma.com/did-elon-musk-do-a-nazi-salute-at-trumps-inauguration/
