I just looked into this and it was a civil case, not criminal. So there would not have been any jail time involved regardless of the outcome.

I hear what you are saying, I do. But I also believe that compassion and empathy are important moral standards, and that now is a crucial time in world history to show what that looks like. And while he is just one man, his plight, and how we respond to it, should serve as a symbolism.
