If you are a NYC resident, you have until Saturday at noon to submit written testimony. Please take time to do this: council.nyc.gov/testify/

Also send a letter to the Mayoral candidates. It takes 2 minutes. actionnetwork.org/letters/dema...

Are you wondering what to write in your testimony? NYC PLAN has you covered: docs.google.com/document/d/1... - please take 10 minutes to do this. It's really important to make yourself heard during this budget process and we've made it really easy for you.

A book buyer at BookOps (which supplies the circulating collection for NYPL + BPL [and which I wrote about back in 2015]) notes their prioritization of diverse books, other-language books — “but they don’t circulate as widely.” We have to check them out to register their value!

Lincoln Restler emphasizes that potential federal cuts to food stamps, housing, Medicare, etc, could “blow a massive hole” in the city budget — which could spell huge cuts to libraries and other services. We need to make sure constituents — esp in red areas — know how these ✂️ will harm them

Someone mentioned a desire for library sleepovers. There’s BPL’s Night @ the Library, of course, + I remember this (invitational) event @ the 42nd St NYPL back in 2011. There was also this stuffed animal 🧸 sleepover, which is 🥹

Libraries always need more staffing and safer facilities with functional HVAC systems. It’s not a shiny new thing so grant funders never want to give money for operating needs, but libraries are better for all when there’s enough staff and updated buildings.

The heart of the event is breakout discussions, where small groups will have the chance to dive deeper into the central question: “What could libraries achieve with more stable and increased funding?”

The event will begin with a brief teach-in on public library funding in NYC, followed by a panel discussion bringing together diverse perspectives on NYC libraries, their funding needs, and the fights to secure that funding.

This is a people-powered convening where we’ll focus on answering the question: “What could/should increased funding make possible for our public libraries?” Are you a library worker or library user? We want your thoughts!

If elected, will you commit to dedicating at least 0.5% of the city’s annual expense budget to public libraries in every financial plan and budget released under your administration? nycplan.org/candidates-s...

Right now, library workers are underpaid and overextended. These shortages aren’t just about headcount—they stem from the fact that library jobs in NYC don’t pay a living wage, leading to high turnover, burnout, and unfilled vacancies.

I was particularly 🥹 to hear so many folks talk abt their desire for a local bookstore. They’ve got a small ✝️ bookshop, + another fancy-ish 🎨 📘shop amidst the galleries + studios in Industry City — but they want a central gen interest shop. They spoke appreciatively of their Little Free Libraries
