Ah, good old 90s mom. It was a different time. youtu.be/MTzyz2TgGls?...

To be perfectly clear, I'm glad people are enjoying their Switch 2s and Mario Kart World! I mean, maybe I'm just old now, and maybe after seeing Nintendo misstep every other generation for so long has made me a little jaded. I think by year's end we'll have a clearer picture.

That seems a little strange to me; The Switch 2 is broadly the same architecture (but not uarch) as the Switch 1, so as long as the APIs aren't totally new, devs should be able to get up and running pretty quick, kind of like with the GameCube->Wii. They'd just need to know the specs to target.

Totally valid, and if you suffer from eye strain, the bigger screen's going to be great too if you like to pick it up and play handheld from time to time. I have big hands so handheld mode is always kind of rough for me with Switch 1...

Tinfoil hat brain says that they're waiting to spin down Switch sales before loading up the hype cannon, since there's still a lot of stock out there.

I feel like Super Mario World was a pretty solid system seller, all things considered, and there was LttP and F-Zero, too. Though you're definitely right: The price is another reason why it's not a "yeah why not" kind of purchase despite the limited launch lineup.

Honestly, if the Switch 2 came in a Switch OLED-style variant, all the upgrades *might* push me over the edge. As it stands, I have a Switch OLED that I rarely use, and I'm not going to invest in a new console til there's a reason for me to pick it up and play it.

I really hope you're right. The PC-ification of consoles has me craving "different", and the Switch was never a powerhouse; 1080p-1440p HDR sounds competitive over 720p-or-less typical for Switch. I want a new Mario Maker tbh, a new Metroid Prime sounds pretty great, but there's no date on it yet.

I got a WiiU on launch; I also got a 3DS on launch, too. Both had basically no software up front besides back-compat. By the time software came along, it was mostly conventional (2DS, DKTF blank tablet, etc). I made this post because I feel like if I got a Switch 2 today, I'd get that feeling again.

I get the impression that MP4 will be one of those titles like BOTW where people will only remember the Switch 2 version, so I feel like I can give it a pass for Switch 2, personally. The "mouse" support will see to that. Still, that's partly why I made this post, the 2025 lineup seems pretty short.

I get the feeling you're right, it just feels like this has been in the making for long enough that I'd have expected a little more of a launch push. I guess they do still have to sell through stock of OG Switches, so I'm hoping 2026 turns out to be a hotter year for software.

I mean, to be fair, I'm glad more control methods are being implemented, because I can see shells or third party mice coming along. The upgrade is largely in hardware (Switch was a 2015-era Maxwell chipset), so I'm not surprised most of the emphasis is on performance.

Upgraded Switch games don't really appeal to me because looking at the notes, largely it's a resolution and frame rate improvement, some do get HDR though. Metroid Prime's not til later this year, no firm date. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping momentum builds in 2026, I just don't see it right now.

Well, that's true, though I honestly feel like the WiiU launch was like the 3DS launch. The difference between the two is that one started getting solid support following what was largely a pricing issue given the early content deficit. The WiiU didn't really get much. Hopefully Switch 2 is a 3DS.

To be clear, I'm not ragging on Nintendo, I'm just looking at the lineup and nothing stands out to me right now, and I'm Getting That Feeling Again™.

That's interesting, I'm kind of the opposite. I guess it goes to show how my priorities shifted away from consoles, I think mostly thanks to the WiiU/Xbone/PS4 window that seriously underwhelmed me. From my POV, a game on PC is a game on Steam Deck. Then again, I'm mostly a single-player person.

Totally fair and valid reasoning. The fact that it does play Switch games and enhances many of them (at least first-party) is a bonus.

Breath of the Wild (the version people bought), Splatoon 2, and (FWIW) 1-2-switch and ARMS. Mario Odyssey same-year. Strong launch, ongoing 1st-party/2nd-party titles. Switch 2 1st party are MK World, arguably DK Bananza. Later this year are Drag x Drive, Hyrule Warriors, and Kirby Air Riders.

Maybe, though the WiiU had some third party support for its launch; It kind of petered out later on as the other consoles' next gen hit. I really feel like Nintendo's strength is in its first-party titles, because most of the third party titles are available elsewhere - Including Steam (Deck).

Having grown up with the small-screen version, can confirm. Mostly different (good) music too! Sonic 2 took this to the extreme as an *entirely* different game from the MD version. I remember being very confused why Tails was on the title screen and act cards when the whole point was to rescue him.

That is absolutely beautifully encapsulated cringe.

Yeah it's gonna be a video. I'm not sure how I'm going to get some of the screencap I need but I'll figure it out. Not looking forward to doing a dramatic re-enactment...

It's funny how I used to think US health insurance was like Canadian single-payer, just with your choice of (no) coverage... hahahaha ha No. Networks, "we disagree with your doctor so we won't pay" medical debt, checkouts at the emergency room...

Yeah that tracks with how much eggs used to cost here. A dozen once upon a time was like $5 CAD. I don't recall them ever being *quite that* cheap in NL, but eggs used to be one of those things you'd still buy if you were broke because it's a staple that fills you up and doesn't cost much per meal.
comment in response to post
Actually thinking about how expensive this is makes my head spin... Even if that number were CAD, this would still be a higher price than even the fanciest free-range eggs available here... I paid $7.99 CAD for my last carton of free-range eggs.

I both feel old and really, really don't at the same time.

Yeah, I'm down about 110lbs from my peak? Almost at my first goal weight. Holidays arrested weight loss but the weight gain was very temporary; Back down where I was again now.

Linux stuff’s on the docket, particularly with Win10’s EOL, but it isn’t going to be the main focus; I’m gonna try and strike a balance.
