Well teams also cost a lot more than in the 80s and 90s. And media guarantees are going down for a lot of teams as well. Not sure what else to say here... Most MLB teams are profitable most years, owning an MLB team for the past 25 years has been great for the Dolans.

Yeah, clearly the intent was lost here. I also did the calculations without dividends reinvested, FWIW. Better way to make this point is likely to say the Guardians purchase might be the worst return for any MLB owner that bought into the league more than a decade ago... profits dont change that

but also compares very poorly to other MLB owners...

Yeah, owners definitely obfuscate the numbers. it's a dance with the MLBPA. and they make additional money in other ways via tax breaks, etc. But we're a very close chronicler of U.S. franchise economics. Probably closer than any other media publication.

Yeah I just don't think the cash flow is as substantial as many people think it is. Yeah, the Guardians have made money in the past 20 years, but in the grand scheme of the annual returns of the $$, it's still likely one of the lowest returns in baseball history.

Agreed. Including the Dolans. But across MLB, the Dolan purchase of the Guardians might be the smallest return for any owner that bought more than 10 years ago.

I mean... they don't all make money in the pure profit sense. certainly not every year and certainly not right now People misunderstood what I was trying to say. Buying the Guardians has been fantastically profitable, and also likely worst return for any MLB owner that bought his team 10+ years ago

Not sure I follow. I'm not saying the Dolans have lost money. Far from it. But its possibly the worst return for any MLB owner that didn't buy his team in the past decade. That's all I'm saying.

nope!

Lol. 0-for-2. In our industry there's a common trope that runaway valuations make any sports team bought 15+ years ago a unicorn type of investment opportunity. I'm just pointing out that that's not always true.

I mean. It's the Cleveland Guardians, not the Dallas Cowboys. Not sure the team dividends are quite what people think here...

It's missing a lot! Tax benefits, profits/losses, fun, etc. Just saying that the CAGR isn't mind-blowing either...
