Part of my work at Marshall & my consulting as Kimbap includes helping orgs write better, more inclusive job postings. I'm incredibly proud to have had a hand in creating this posting for ED of @transjournalists.org--I hope you'll take a peek and apply or share it! airtable.com/apppaTdSPRyF...

Heading to #NICAR25? @ecg.bsky.social, @jamiegreytv.bsky.social & I will be teaching our @ire-nicar.bsky.social master class on “Managing Investigators.” This time, it’s byte-sized (data joke), FREE and right before our management meetup! Join us: bit.ly/4hHaks9 😊

Hi! Quick note: The Onion accidentally posted a stock photo from a vendor with an AI generated image in it. We pulled the post down once we found that out. Our commitment to not using AI is very real. It's in the union contract to disclose it if we ever do. World is a slop minefield and we're sorry.

The good folks at Nieman invited my prediction for next year. So here's what I'm excited about: a boom for local investigative and data-driven journalism made possible through partnerships and support from teams like The Marshall Project, The Trace & Big Local News www.niemanlab.org/2024/12/loca...

Penultimate batch of @niemanlab.org Predictions just went up! Featuring: @addonohue.bsky.social @dadadrummer.bsky.social @dmitryshishkin.bsky.social @elenahebe.bsky.social @ecg.bsky.social @jomc.bsky.social @lelasavic.bsky.social @mattwaite.bsky.social 1/2 www.niemanlab.org/collection/p...

I was not this smart or collected at age 16 -- perhaps I am not even so at age 37 now. L.W. spoke of wanting to engage with her opposers: “I just don’t understand,” L.W. said. “What’s the worst they can say to me? I’ve heard it all.”

As a rule of thumb, I don't engage in grave dancing -- I think it's bad karma. However, this piece raises some really smart and timely points, tying the reactions to Brian Thompson's murder to the celebratory posts we saw when Henry Kissinger passed last year.

I’ve always loved this so much about New York. 9/11 can happen and everyone will still be lile “well, time for egg and cheese sandwich”

LISTEN NOW: The US Supreme Court hears arguments in US v. Skrmetti, on whether Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for trans minors violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. www.supremecourt.gov/oral_argumen...

My brilliant colleague @journo-beth.bsky.social is curating and posting around the SCOTUS arguments today... Give Beth a follow!!

Wondering what's happening with the U.S. vs. Skrmetti Supreme Court case this week? Here are some resources 🧵

KOREA!!!! wyd....

For those just tuning in: I'm an American born in Korea, and I typically work out of the US. This week I am working out of Seoul. I have no particular expertise in Korean politics. Me being at the protests during the declaration of martial law is just a weird fucking thing that happened.

Wonder if news editors are going to realize people knew about an actual coup an hour-plus earlier on bluesky than twitter. Hearing a lot of that rumbling from old friends still in the legacy content mines today.

TIL my insurance-preferred mail order pharmacy just "doesn't do" overnight shipping!!! In the year of our goddess, 2024!!!!! EVEN when it is *their own damn fault* that you have been without your meds for nearly a month...

Rewatching Grey’s Anatomy as a sad weird coping mechanism, and dang, S12 is full of fascinating lady leadership storylines! Passing of the chief torch to a woman for the first time, then going on to lowball Meredith Grey on her big promotion, her lady colleagues struggling to help her through it

Why are men so emotional

Cops pepper spraying college football players is all the proof you need that they can’t de-escalate a damn thing.

I’m just saying, he’s one dude. This means, he comes with his own limitations and biases in place. Without owning those and examining their influence, this isn’t a good faith effort. It’s just an attempt to be first and loudest.

A thing that worries me is while so many are transitioning away from X, is we will see our communities and infrastructure designed and iterated upon by those who rushed in and started talking loudly. How can we make space for those who build community differently, with inclusion and intention?

Please stop trying to make Single Person Verification Systems a thing. One person = one pov. This means bias (His) is already influencing the final product of whom “He” knows and doesn’t know, finds interesting or doesn’t. This is a dangerous game and Bluesky should take note, not jump into bed.

Currently stuck in a special circle of hell where Delta bounces us to Korean Air, then Korean bounces us back to Delta. All we want to do is give someone some money to upgrade our seats….. on the upside, we’re no longer bound to a 75-min layover in ATL (least fave airport!!), instead straight to JFK

If you remember and still miss Nuzzel, and use Bluesky or Mastodon, have I got good news for you. This tool shows you the most shared links in your network. Hella useful.

Honestly, I think anyone doing tourism in Bali should have to do some eco-add ons just to explore and learn. We planted 19 mangroves today (Jake’s second mangrove planting of our trip!!)

The US isn't an autocracy…yet. In @columjournreview.bsky.social, Sheila Coronel shares 10 tips for journalists reporting under autocratic rule. www.cjr.org/political_pr...

Read it and bookmark it!!!!

I’m about to embark on a snorkeling journey!! I’m a reasonably strong swimmer and have decentish breath control. Yet, the last time I snorkeled (pre-Christmas Key West a few yrs back…) I had a panic attack! Here’s hoping I don’t die!!

Ummmmm… why is one guy claiming he is the one verifying journalists and news orgs here with his Starter Pack? That’s not how this place works. That literally the opposite of this platform’s goals. It’s so odd, no?

There is a noticeable problem with this list and if you don’t see it, you are part of the problem.

I just need people to understand that NYC is majority minority city and around a third (someone fact check me on this) of the city is foreign born. But I've not once worked on a desk in journalism in NYC that reflected these demographics.

Still seeking great folks to follow in the realms of: * non professional watercolor and mixed media artists (hobbyist types who like to support other hobby artists) * Korean cooks / chefs / Korean food enthusiasts of all kinds * anyone doing a non-shit job of covering South Brooklyn locally
