I just need people to understand that NYC is majority minority city and around a third (someone fact check me on this) of the city is foreign born. But I've not once worked on a desk in journalism in NYC that reflected these demographics.

Intracommunity issues can be talked while also in same breathe holy Jesus fuck deportation is not a fucking joke and as a first gen to two immigrant parents I’m not fucking around with that shit
I thought about that
When the NYT cooking community on FB was in a bit of chaos over the Alison Roman drama
They canned her for being precisely who they are and who they catered to
I'm not intimate with the newspaper community at all
It just doesn't take very keen observation skills to notice
Also very little "set in NYC" shows reflect this reality. Even the "favorites" - much of Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Friends were all shot after the city stopped being majority white.
I really really remember liking the friend's theme song. But somehow never watching the show. IDK if we just watched the opening credits and then switched or what.
I remember going to see Good Will Hunting while in college and they have a scene with a math class at Harvard or whatever. My reaction was, “whoa, the casting director thought the math department was all gonna be white?”
What's worse is that the writing in "And Just Like That" made it seem as though the four women had been in comas - until they woke up decades decades after the #SATC season finale and learned that the city has lots of non-white people in it. https://www.televisionofyore.com/andjustlikethat.html
So the city is majority white (31%) but barely! The next biggest demographic is the hispanic community at 29%. All-in-all, the city is very diverse! We have the data on our site. But yes, those shows only show the Manhattan demograhics, which is even more-so white (47%).
It took a year or so to get accustomed to a majority of White Colonizers up here in #Canada. #HamOnt makes me nervous, i feel like im going to a Klan meeting or something, and im Irish-American. White Supremecy up here is way more prevelant, and replacement theory is a "Real Threat". #racists
I went to grad school (vague because I don't want to publicly admit to the MBA) in Houston(!) and there was one Hispanic-American student. There were a large number of students from across Latin America, but only one Hispanic-American. I'm worried that I used the word "American" too many times here.
My Spanish friend, a huge Friends and Sex and the City fan, visited NYC for the first time about 20 years ago; when she came back she said that everyone spoke Spanish there, but she had never seen that on those shows…
Lol not everyone but a lot. And most official documents have to be translated into the 10 most commonly used languages which are currently: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, and Polish
Every time we are getting acutely Trumped I say “Why don’t some journalists just come down to Flatbush for the day. Like a field trip. Like ride a bus. Shop at a corner store. Meet people. Get a damned snack…” (Rhetorical.)
The whitest place I ever worked was at an e-commerce website (under a well-known media brand) in midtown. I was there for seven years and routinely went months as the only POC there.
Did they do that cringe thing where you had to be the representative for all things related to your ethnic background? I used to be annoyed by that then eventually found it absurdly funny. Like, sure Bob lemme just email the Grand Council to get our official statement on that.
To their credit, no! Most of the microaggressions actually came through in the work and it was relatively easy for me to address them as the copy editor.
However, a lot of my white coworkers were aware of it and we brought it up in anonymous (?) feedback whenever that time came around.
