I would say the goal is to not frequently remove errant children...both because it's not a way to teach appropriate behavior within the instructional setting and (honestly) because of staffing challenges!
comment in response to post
That's not how this will work on the ground. Staffing one single child to be removed from an instructional environment at the drop of a hat is a logistical nightmare. Teachers will start self censoring material they use in instruction to avoid the dilemmas/ repercussions from specific parents.

So we're clear, it's not on the parents to "pull" kids out. This ruling means it's on the schools to separate & staff a child when any part of a lesson includes anything related to LGBTQ. A character in a book, a reference in a math problem, it's the school's responsibility to remove the child.

Well this quote sucks: "Is this really the time to fuss about what might or might not be gender politics in a literary contest?” Yes?! Because it's always the time to "fuss" about the impact of gender, race, religion, and whatever else on one of the most important literary contests 😡

O and if you'd like to learn about the history and power of sheriff's in this country (separate from police) I recommend this: www.npr.org/2024/09/10/1...

I will say, both Montgomery and PG counties police departments have refused to cooperate with ICE. But yea, call your MD state reps and tell them you're pissed! It's disgusting.

Secondly, this bill had been discussed for weeks and was finally passed minutes before the legislative session ended. There were people calling/advocating until the final minutes (literally 1130pm) and unfortunately the Sheriff's lobbied harder/faster/stronger. It was a huge disappointment.

To clarify details that are in the article: This is a state legislature issue, so when we say "call your reps" we mean your Maryland State elected reps. Website below to find out who's representing you at the state level: mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/m...

I listened to their interview on The Daily NYT & I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, to explain what was so wrong about lockdown, to offer other options for the future & they never did. It boiled down to: this was hard and we shouldn't have asked Americans to do it in the past or the future

This is from the pre-Schumer bomb. Do we know if it's still accurate?

A yes vote is a vote for DOGE and Elon Musk. If you're not willing to fight for the people of this country, go home. Abstain from the vote. Some of us still care about people and we're willing fight.
comment in response to post
When it's the only way to get through, I'd send carrier pigeons if it would get Schumer to listen to his constituents.
comment in response to post
It would be a disaster if you vote yes. And if you can't stomach the fight and vote no on this GOP CR, then go home. Sit this one out. Some of us still care about people in this country and clearly you are not one of those people.

O yea. The list of people not accepting faxes at all isn't all that surprising

If you're not willing to fight for the people of this country, go home. A vote yes for the GOP CR is a vote of approval for DOGE. If you're not willing to like Elon Musk, at least abstain. Some of us still care about the people of this country.

If you're not going to fight, go home. Abstain and let those of us who care about the people of this country fight for it. Some of us still care.

Stand and fight or resign. You're the one handing over the keys. Some of us still care about people in this country. If you don't want to fight for them, go home.

You're giving your tacit approval to everything happening in the federal government since January 20. Fight or go home. Some of us still care about the people of this country.

I do agree that Igor is not a source of comfort. This not a love story of Ani+Vanya or Ani+Igor. It's a story of survival, although the ending is ambiguous about whether she survives IMO.
comment in response to post
That her real persona is not a fighter like Ani; Anora is vulnerable. Igor is the only one who even wants to see Anora, which he expresses in their last night. I don't see him expressing positivity towards her name Anora as fascination so much as genuine interest.
comment in response to post
I really appreciate this perspective. The author mentions the dif between real vs curated persona in the sex worker world and how character Ani has no difference. I wonder if Ani's real persona is Anora, and it's so hidden we don't see it until the very end?

Sigh I just wish I didn't take so long to get there... But yes the end was excellent.

No! Use the TOTALLY FREE option from the IRS. It's been piloted in some states the last few years but it's available in all 50 states this year. An added bonus is the #47 hates it so we want it to be massively successful. bsky.app/profile/warr...
