A lot of folks asked why I through this January's record global temperatures were so unexpected. I think this graph shows it pretty clearly: pretty much every other January with La Nina conditions has been a cooler than the surrounding years.

January 2025 was quite unexpectedly the warmest January on record at 1.75C above preindustrial, beating the prior record set in 2024. This is despite the presence of La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific, with the El Niño event of 2023/2024 long faded. www.theclimatebrink....

China has a long way to go to reduce CO2 emissions. But in recent years they have been building far more clean energy technology than the US: 7x more EVs, 9x more solar, and 11x more wind. We risk ceding 21st century clean energy dominance to the Chinese.
