Drug overdose deaths in SF are up 50% since Denim Dan took over. Where all the recall people now?! brokeassstuart.com/2025/05/20/d...

🛠️ Just got back from the 2025 California Co-Op Conf. Feeling inspired by the incredible workers and organizers building across food, housing, tech, and more. Also learned about new policy efforts like AB 746, aimed at establishing a prison co-op for incarcerated workers 🌱

We’re starting LA’s first and only worker-led newsroom dedicated to investigative reporting because we cannot have billionaires and hedge funds dictating the flow of our information. Subscribe & donate: thesouthlander.com #TheSouthlander

Interesting details about food delivery biz in SF. There's a SoMa company that rents cargo e-bikes to deliveristas. Good in that it's greener than driving, but exploitative: they make the renter 50% liable for theft. As @veenadubal.bsky.social observes though, Doordash is the primary exploiter here.

This week’s hearing on police overtime abuse was a turning point. Supervisors Walton and Fielder deserve enormous credit for sponsoring this hearing, which may be the first real step toward breaking San Francisco’s addiction to wasteful police spending.

From cold plunges to COVID lotería, this small group of immigrant women are combining traditional remedies and grassroots research to strengthen mental health care among Latinos in San Francisco. eltecolote.org/content/en/s...

"Mass incarceration didn’t just destroy families. It disorganized the working class." Read from Labor Organizer of the Year, Katherine Passley, on her work at Beyond the Bars.

“According to organizers with the ACLU, who presented on the overtime fiasco on Monday evening, it appears the cuts to services are explicitly targeting ‘queer people, women, and immigrants.’” brokeassstuart.com/2025/05/01/p...

Pleasantly surprised to see supervisors across the SF political spectrum including Chan and even Engardio (good on him!) call out cuts to eviction legal defense, financial coaching, and other social services. Cutting SFPD overtime to fund these services would be a huge net win for public safety!

If you’re in San Francisco, I’ll be speaking about Copaganda tomorrow night! Bring a friend.

@equalityalec.bsky.social will be in SF this Friday to talk about his new book, Copaganda. Check it out!

Free talk Friday in SF with @equalityalec.bsky.social on his new book Copaganda, an excellent read so far! actionnetwork.org/events/in-co...

While right wing techbro Garry Tan (the Musk sycophant who called for the death of SF elected officials) has a complete meltdown on the bad site, now is a great time to support and donate to the grassroots organizations he and his fellow right wing tech bros attack. Links below.

NIKKEI RESISTERS protest at 2025 NorCal Cherry Blossom Fest. Japanese Americans: Don’t give imperialist hacks like Sheriff Paul Miyamoto, Sen. Scott Wiener, DA Brooke Jenkins, and SFPD an invitation #sfjapantown #cherryblossomfestival #nikkei

This place really is Twitter 2.0. Is there a ux wishlist for mastodon that would help bring folks over?

👻 If you're hosting a ghost site and want to avoid exposing your servers IP, switch from the `smtp` transport option to the `mailgun` transport option.

Was really a matter of time - a six-figure grant to the Internet Archive was dropped halfway through its spending, with zero warning. sfstandard.com/2025/04/17/d...

Data centers are expanding globally; destroying the climate, exploiting labor, and creating toxic conditions for those nearby In this webinar we'll unpack what they are, why they're expanding, how we can organize against them. 📆 April 18, 2025 ⏰ 3pm PDT / 6pm EDT Register at bit.ly/datacenters101

We often don’t hear about censorship in the other direction: keeping our voices from getting out to the public.

New immigration updates are in: ICE can now operate in houses of worship and the IRS is sharing private data to help deport immigrants. Here’s the latest.

Everyone should be able to travel without the fear of surveillance and retaliation. States like California, Illinois, and Massachusetts are taking steps to protect location data privacy and defend our right to move freely without fear. More states must join.

"All signs point to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) preparing to take over a shuttered Bay Area women’s prison to house immigrant detainees — despite toxic living conditions and a documented history of abuse." eltecolote.org/content/en/i...

Great new piece by @katewillett.bsky.social “On their book tour, Thompson and Klein sound less like journalists and more like spokesmen for these groups, repeating polished talking points about who the enemies of Abundance are—leftists—and who isn’t to blame after all: oligarchs.”

opkssh (SSH with OpenID Connect) v0.4 released New features: - Group-based policy - Custom IDP support for OpenID Providers like @zitadel.com #authentik, #Okta, #Keycloak Thanks to everyone who contributed: rndmh3ro, SamMurphyDev, mark-ignacio, mikeweinberg, Hanarion github.com/openpubkey/o...

Here’s what my morning sounded like, some updates on what I’ve been up to and links to folks covering what’s going on locally in San Francisco. eddywashere.com/april-shower...

So far, district court judges are showing a lot more spine than US Senators

On an earnings call, the CEO of Palantir talked openly about killing “enemies,” then added, “I’m sure you’re enjoying this as much as I am!” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

@jay.bsky.team Revenue model I would love for Bsky: get me through paywalls, letting me give micropayments to participating journalistic websites. & let me sponsor friends access to paywalled articles that I share. Also allow microdonations to non-paywall sites ie NPR. Bsky + journalists get paid!

aaaand now it all makes sense

We were in the middle of so many things that I didn’t have time to appropriately share this article which made it clear that we had to spin out of fiscal sponsorship and into our own organization: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Fiscal sponsorship is a great model for new change movements, but this is a reminder of why it can be limiting. On the upside, this was a moment for recalibration that spurred growth. Congratulations! #Values #STEM

Everyone knows that San Francisco is facing a huge housing crisis. Waiting for private developers to fund and build the housing we need isn’t working. A new report confirms what I’ve been saying for years: San Francisco can build our own. Let’s do it.

By @brettwilkins.bsky.social: "This report lays bare that Gaza is one of the most horrifying places in the world to be a child," says Helen Pattinson of @warchilduk.bsky.social as a new study reveals almost all Gazan children believe their deaths are imminent—and half of them want to die.

Our very first guest on System Crash is the one and only @molly.wiki. In our first two eps, we talked about Elon and the unfurling Trump-Musk tech oligarchy, and the current state of AI. So for our 3rd, we wanted to dive into the *other* big tech story of the year—the resurgence of crypto.

💫 Updated this post about the Ghost publishing platform which was my fun way of sharing a new media and organizing strategy. I have started to add a changelog at the bottom of my posts to note what I've added. For this one, I've updated it with screenshots as I explore 👻 PS I made my first $5 😭
