4/ Sometimes motifs are built into the structure of the rail, for example, on Charlotte Square trumpet shapes form part of the railing pattern. This is to mimic the tool used to snuff out the torches of ‘link boys’, who would light your way home in the pre-street lamp days.

3/ You can find pinecones on Drummond Place, fleur-de-lis and crosses on Cumberland Street, and spades on Regent Road. Sometimes motifs are built into the structure of the rail, for example, on Charlotte Square trumpet shapes form part of the railing pattern. 🌲⚜️♠️

2/ Across Edinburgh, railings are important features of the streetscape. This is especially true in the New Town, where elaborate Georgian ironmongery is expressed in finials (the ornamental toppings of railings).

2/ The style of the ramp is not in keeping with its context – a globally-recognised Georgian square in the heart of our city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

1/ We are disappointed with the interim ramp unveiled in Charlotte Square last week. This does not reflect the advice we and heritage colleagues within the Council provided.
