Probably has an ego aspect to it, too. The thought that they are too important to be harmed by any policies, only the other, lesser, people deserve to be punished.

He can be fat, out of shape and still play well. As supposedly a team leader it sets a bad precident to other players who can't. Even if he is the best player on the team talent-wise he still has to out work everyone else to be a leader.
