My take on it was always that it was problematic because it conflated a number of different stereotypes together, but it was also a wonder at a time when there wasn't as much... glorious celebration of that particular corner of pop culture.

The biggest problem is that there isn't actually a standard bag size, so a bag that fits European standards will be slightly too wide (tall in these) for a US bin, and a U.S. bag will be slightly too deep. <xkcd standards comic />
