Absolutely nothing in this story is reassuring: the more the models learn to reason, the more they're inclined to deceive. But fascinating www.economist.com/science-and-... From The Economist

Corruption.

If you're protesting this weekend, it's vital you know your rights Save these bust cards, share with others, write phone numbers on your arm, look for legal observers if you need assistance and remember to say "no comment" without a lawyer Keep yourselves and each other safe

The key chart right now: Usually US economic pain is cushioned by falling bond yields and a strengthening dollar, which mean lower interest rates and more spending power for consumers. This time we’re seeing the opposite, meaning the pain will be amplified.

Blairite triangulation just isn’t working. Voters want a party that actually believe in something and delivers on it. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Column, on the spectacularly bad-faith/ideologically contorted White House demands the "free speech protection" be a factor in UK-US trade talks www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

“I was just following orders” was not a defense at Nuremberg. And it won’t be a defense in the future here.

Excellent thread.

Called my congressman who voted for the SAVE act. Me: What documents will I need to vote if this passes? Staffer: a DL and birth certificate. Me: The documents don’t match Staffer: Then a marriage certificate. Me: Will my husband need the marriage certificate too? Staffer: No Me: See the problem?

Perhaps this is all a cunning plan to see off Russia by having Putin laugh himself to death.

Tax cut for Musk, Bezos and other tech billionaires on the table, Starmer confirms. NO. People suffering cuts in benefits; NHS queues; crumbling infrastructure whilst the richest rewarded. Mustn't capitulate to Trump's bullying. archive.ph/AjYc7

Keir Starmer orders UK economic reset amid Donald Trump’s tariff mayhem How about starting by rejoining the EU?

Corruption. Plain and simple. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

The US economy drove globalisation, offshoring of factories, and jobs. Almost no US sector is set up for the change back and companies will be unlikely to leap to change partly because Trump changes his mind so often and because Democratics will likely reverse it all in four years time. Disaster.

All the Democrats in the US have to do is say that when they are next elected in four years time they will reverse all Trumps tariffs. That will sink him below the waterline. No company is going to build a manufacturing base back in the USA when in four years time it will cease to be competitive.

I am one of the authors whom Meta stole (sorry, ‘scraped’) from, by using their books to train Libgen. So I’m biased. But this from @mscaitlinmoran.bsky.social is👌

The full report by the Tony Blair Institute is out, in which they detail how copyright should be "rebooted" in the AI age. It reads like a big tech lobbying document. I hope they will be asked serious questions at its launch in London today. Some very brief highlights: 🧵 1/8

Are the US about to enter the Liz Truss phase of blowing up your own economy?🥬

Social media companies desperate to avoid regulation and tax.

Money corrupts, and money in politics corrupts completely.

Fingers crossed for the rule of law: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

This is what corruption looks like.

John Keker of Keker, Van Nest & Peters’ message to big firms wavering or scared: Stand up. Don’t just be scared for yourself—be scared for the entire situation, for the rule of law, and for the role of lawyers in this democracy.

Terrific reporting by @nytimes.com. Shame the British media can’t expose this for themselves. Will only fuel suspicion that Farage and his Brexit gang are - and have always been - a Putinist front

Not sure why the erroneous sharing of key information via Signal to a journalist is so shocking. After all they probably mainline the information to the Russians already.

The reality of claiming PIP: a 🧵 1) To claim PIP you have to describe in excruciating detail all the ways you cannot function. This means that you are forced to think in very detailed terms exactly how disabled you are, which often has a devastating effect on the mental health of the applicant 1/?

Cracking comment piece by @philipnye.bsky.social on what has been going wrong at the ONS and what needs to change. It's essential for good policy making that the ONS gets its house in order www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/offi...

This is what the entire neoliberal project has been about: eliminating the "social wage," including retirement. Capitalists want to make us solely reliant on whatever job they want to exploit us at. Otherwise: die. What we're fighting for is life - not working until death. wapo.st/3DKAX0I
