🚨 Cutting #PEPFAR funding to South Africa = catastrophic clinical & economic fallout: 📉 +565K new HIV infections ⚰️ +601K additional deaths 📉 Life expectancy ⬇️ up to 3.7 years 💰 $1.7B extra healthcare $$ over 10 years Investing in HIV saves lives & money. www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/...

Global health suffers from two forms of elite capture: the global and the local Please read both these papers! journals.plos.org/globalpublic... journals.plos.org/globalpublic...

The latest clarification on how PEPFAR funds may be used, issued today limits PrEP only for pregnant women and breastfeeding women. Women in Africa participated in research studies that allowed us to understand how these medications work many did so with the promise of continued access post study.

This is a very valuable resource: it estimates the HIV infections and deaths that are likely to occur due to the U.S. aid freeze. Suddenly freezing health aid, with no careful plan to fill the funding gap, is a death sentence for many people. This is human-caused misery, suffering, and mortality.

I am credibly told that all the officials working on #HIV at #USAID has been put on administrative leave. Meanwhile the waivers Sec Rubio is claiming have not actually been communicated to implementers and they are withdrawing in-country staff, so nobody is actually available to stop the stop-work.

First genome sequence from the Ugandan Ebolavirus outbreak with analysis: virological.org/t/990 and first filovirus genome submitted to Pathoplexus database: pathoplexus.org/seq/PP_0011C.... Great (and rapid) work from the National Health Laboratory, UVRI and partners.

"A sudden and prolonged stop to HIV programmes does not allow for a managed transition and puts the lives of millions at risk" @who.int expresses deep concern about US pause on HIV funding www.who.int/news/item/28...

Morally repugnant and a death sentence for millions.

Thanks to all who joined for this important discussion! At the end of the event, moderator @edythparker.bsky.social asked attendees to answer this question: What encourages you about the future of biosecurity? Respond below!

Wendy Barclay and I are recruiting a postdoc for a project investigating the evolution of swine influenza viruses and how this impacts future pandemic potential. Job is based at Imperial's South Kensington campus. Drop me a DM/email for more details. www.imperial.ac.uk/jobs/search-...

🆕 On Jan 10 @who.int received reports of suspected Marburg cases in Tanzania. - 9 suspects including eight deaths (89% fatality rate), were reported. - Samples are pending official confirmation - Contacts, including healthcare workers, are under follow-up. www.who.int/emergencies/...

Should be a fun discussion! With @edythparker.bsky.social wearing her moderator hat :)

Join us for a discussion with some of my favourite people and thinkers on the future of early warning systems in biosurveillance!

Really proud to share our preprint describing early adaptation of H5N1 to US dairy cattle, and showing how these mutations enhance the ability of the virus to infect other mammals, such as pigs and humans. With @influenzal.bsky.social @vidhid.bsky.social @drclairesmith.bsky.social and many more!

Thanks to Jon Cohen at Science Magazine for covering our study on mpox vaccination needs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. www.science.org/content/arti...

Insufficient vaccine doses available to expand mpox vaccination drive in Kinshasa in the DRC. Pledged vaccine doses have not fully materialized much like during covid. A global pandemic changed little about how we approach access and equity in outbreak response.
