Pondering: how would we (Americans) react if we assumed: 1) Congress, including the opposition, is not capable of materially meaningful opposition 2) The courts are too slow to stop most of this damage 3) Most Americans’ lives will, very shortly, be materially worse bc of this administration

Hi gay! Get your vaccines

Perhaps the China hawks have some juice after all

The original (official) basis for anti-LGBT discrimination in federal workforce was that these people were susceptible to blackmail. Bit of a "hundred flowers" situation here - feds created tolerant spaces for trans people, now anyone in those spaces can be fired.

I am once again wondering how POTUS’s reticence to confront Beijing will end up resolving itself against the overwhelming mood in Congress and the rest of DC elites that views China as our most serious threat

Sat down at the coffee shop in DC for a snack and some work, only to notice a suited man behind me was cracking open a brand new paperback copy of Herman Kahn’s On Thermonuclear War. [Written in the 50s exploring concrete scenarios of impact and survivability in the case of actual nuclear war.]

I’ve been doomscrolling like the rest of us, but these have all sparked joy this week: - Receiving photographs of my grandma taken by my great-grandfather - Homemade turmeric bean stew - Architectural Digest, in hard copy - My BluePath Labs team - Sunlight after 5pm in Chicago - My group chats

Was seized by a sudden need to start making limoncello tonight

I know this is a low blow but I can’t help noticing her face is giving strong fish out of water gasping for air vibes here

Honestly I thought the obsession with general intelligence and whatever the hell IQ measures - as opposed to a much more useful understand of a spectrum of types of “intelligence” - was something most jettison by middle age, but here we are

A reminder to log out of all social media and mail on your electronic devises before traveling internationally. And whatever else the experts recommend to protect your privacy in the event of searches at U.S. ports of entry. For U.S. citizens too. I heard tings, I heard tings.

At a quick glance, I don't see any stipulations for kicking out one of the "Second Parties" to the UKUSA treaty like Canada. The US could certainly terminate the agreement, but that wouldn't prevent the other four members from continuing separately. media.defense.gov/2021/Jul/15/...

Starting to see BlueSky links on résumés

I remain obsessed with NYRB personals

Always a sign of a convincing argument when the first piece of evidence offered is an SAT score from the ‘80s

Technically, Ukraine would not be able to sign this given the negative pledge clauses in their loan agreement with the @worldbankgroup.bsky.social (and other creditors). The clause prevents other creditors from seizing assets before the World Bank.

This largely speculative piece already is not aging well, but this is probably going to come true at some point: “Musk will inevitably collide with powerful fellow appointees, who also enjoy access to the boss, & who will command the departments whose operations DOGE will supposedly be overhauling”

This tool continues to spark joy

Note it also takes some time if you have a big library; Amazon doesn’t allow a mass download

Max has already come out with some sort of Luigi Mangione documentary, it seems

“I’m, we are the federal law”

Local Republican congressman does not know what the word “duplicitous” means (it means deceitful, not duplicative)

This is the book in question, btw
