I had so much fun introducing their sound to my son (who is now 18).

Another contender is "The Low End Theory" from Tribe Called Qwest. The title refers in part to the status of Black men and there are some really politically pointed lyrics in addition to songs that are all about word play. (Maybe even their first two albums combined)

If you want Hip Hop then "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of..." has some tracks that can be used to really explore the Black experience.

I feel like the best answer may be "What's Going On" from Marvin Gaye.

The Nuremberg trials were excellent for understanding the evils of Nazism but were actually pretty ineffective at making sure there were consequences. Only 12 of the original 22 defendants were convicted. Later the same court ended up not pursuing 3400 out of about 3800 proposed cases.

They probably figure that delaying the Iran nuke for X amount of time is worth some short term violence. Also, some of these folks definitely believe that Iranians will topple the regime themselves if it can be destabilized with bombings.

Also, sorry that I began to jewsplain something you already knew. Shabbat Shalom from the South (AKA New Jersey)

Myzmanim has plag for you at 8:18 which, granted, isn't much better. So yeah, that's a bit of a problem. (I once spent a summer with a teen outdoor adventure group around Seattle. Not nearly as extreme as you, but WOW did Shabbat end late)

Wait, just how far north are you?

Kab Shab isn't exactly an obligation to begin with, and zman is all about fulfilling obligations. However, having reread your post, you should know that the vast majority of authorities allow you to begin Shabbat pretty early.
comment in response to post
You could just be chassidishe and pretend that zmanim are more guidelines and not rules.

I generally trust the Mossad as much as any intelligence agency can be trusted, so on par with the CIA/MI6.

The whole "rights" framing is a red herring no matter what country it is being applied to.
comment in response to post
I never use "rights" framing for how sovereign states act in their own defense. If you can't defend yourself then you aren't a sovereign state. (You may be confusing me with people who use the whole "Does Israel have a right to ____" as a gotcha question. I've never used that framing, it's silly)
comment in response to post
On the one hand, the timing is suspect. On the other, I mostly trust the Mossad and this was clearly many months, if not years, in the making. The question is for how long has this been ready to go.

It was also often used as a salve in periods when all the Jewish community seemed to experience was harm at the hands of others. "At least they'll get theirs" and all that.

The Holiday Inn Express in Silver Spring (~10 minutes walk from Metro) is as low as $137 tonight. I know from experience that $200+ isn't unusual for the weekend there.

I have heard that you should expect a lot of difficult (for Americans) to identify sea food.

Heaven/Hell hanging over our heads. Just a VERY different perspective on human nature I think.

I know - it is among the many reasons that the term "Judeo-Christian" often doesn't make sense. A very nice Evangelical gentleman was proselytizing me when I was volunteering in MS after Katrina. He couldn't understand how Jews feel motivated to do good works without

I don't trust Bibi - at all - but the Mossad are pretty well respected in the intelligence community. This whole operation feels more Mossad than Bibi to me.

Today it's a pretty park and also an outdoor concert venue.

"gehennom" is named after the valley of "Gey Hinom" which is just outside the old city of Jerusalem. There's a tradition that before the Israelites took over this valley was where idol worshippers (maybe of Ba'al?) conducted their human sacrifices.

I get the joke - we make it ourselves sometimes! - but for a slightly serious answer: Modern Judaism just doesn't concern ourselves a whole lot on what happens when we die. We certainly don't use it as a primary motivation for our actions.

I figure there's always a chance for something symbolic and small and then everyone backs down. I rate that as unlikely, sadly, but you never know.

I would say the same thing that I say said to my son when we first got the news on 10/7: This is going to be bad and a lot of people might get killed.

Of course, a real bagel is only truly fresh for a couple of hours.
comment in response to post
Depends on what's going on the bagel. For a cold spread then toasting a fresh bagel is bad. For a hot sandwich, like egg and cheese, it really adds to the overall flavor.

The US still has paper visas? It isn't all just attached to the passport?

My Netflix account comes with a bunch of free games in the Google Play store (don't know about iphone). There's a Mah Jong tile matching game that is SO relaxing when I need to get sleepy.

I agree, it is just a very younger kid thing to do - he's adorable, even at 18.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

I've known a couple of people who lived in Santa Monica - they were pretty emphatic that they DIDN'T live in LA.

Not even a whole movie - at the age of 2/3 my son was OBSESSED with "Step In Time" from Mary Poppins and needed to both watch and dance to it multiple times a week. It would have been more annoying if it wasn't also effing cute.

My wife and I were both in education when we adopted our son as an infant, so glitter was already on the "dead to me" list and had been for many years.

Also, not only toddlers! My son, who is now 18, called me from his car a few months ago with a "guess what I'm driving behind" - it was a helicopter on a truck! This super cool teen was SO EXCITED that he had to CALL HIS FATHER with the news that there was a helicopter on a truck.

I learned a number of years ago that "how do you spend your time" is such a better question. While it's open ended it feels less stressful/judgy than "what do you do".
comment in response to post
Whenever I get a new therapist I have to train them NOT to use these general open ended questions because I have no idea how to answer them. I had already figured that part out a few years before I learned about alexithymia and that I'm likely autistic.

As long as he's a decent judge of people he can pretty easily make up for any gaps in experience by hiring/appointing a good staff.

And I'm one of the lucky ones! Due to interruptions of care in the past I know that I can look forward to a week of bad sleep and weird stomach issues. I know that for others it can be a LOT worse.

Part of this is just acknowledging that withdrawal from these meds is both real and unpredictable. More than one a psych has tried to prescribe something with the claim that it doesn't cause any sort of dependency. We then look it up at home and it becomes a hard hell no.

Having read the article and as someone on an SSRI myself, it seems pretty legit and fills a niche. And that's in spite of a tech founder calling it "Uber for ________", which usually means that the whole thing is BS.
