It is basically impossible to get people to believe that things like impoundment and extraordinary rendition and illegal trade wars are a crisis if nobody in a position of authority acts like they are.

it’s a perfect plan. we will fire everyone doing skilled work in science, technology and medicine and force them into factories making consumer electronics. this will enrich the country somehow.

a lesson for every college, law firm, business, etc. — if these chodes demand you do something, your first response should be some form of "make me"

If only SOMEBODY hadn’t unconditionally surrendered all the Democrats’ leverage for nothing in return.

In fact, it is offensively ridiculous to think that any but a handful of people disappeared by ICE will be able to file habeas corpus, because it relies on them having informed families with connections to available knowledgeable lawyers with time and resources to act instantly.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Nobody should have been sent there, period. Not the ones with no record, not the ones with a record. Nobody.

I saw a version of this on here before but it's worth yelling: these institutions that Musk is illegally dismantling– the weather service, health system, climate & energy research, international aid, maybe the US mail(?)– they don't belong to him, they belong to us. We invested in them. They're ours

“He told agents they had the wrong guy, but they aggressively ordered him to get on the ground. They didn’t allow him to show ID to prove he’s a citizen and instead they grabbed him, put him face down on the pavement, handcuffed him and took out his wallet.” www.mlive.com/news/ann-arb...

This administration is rushing to create an actual, technical dark age for future historians and scholars. I can't think of a punishment serious enough to fit the magnitude of the crime

Decided to check out how "dominant" that trans fencer was, and... she came in 24th place (out of 39) in this tournament. It's almost like this isn't about "fairness" at all.

I'm 18. The economy enters a once-in-a-century recession. A Republican president is responsible. I'm 29. There is once-in-a-century pandemic that leads to a once-in-century-recession. A Republican is responsible. I'm 35. Tarriffs trigger a once-in-a-century recession. A Republican is responsible.

68,845,865. That's how many individuals in the United States speak a language other than English at home. Everyone deserves a chance to stay safe during disasters, and I will never stop advocating for that. Thinking of all the communities that are going to be affected by this change.

Break it, then privatize it. Building up private U.S. forecasting ability to current NWS levels after such a ruthless and foolish decimation of the NWS will take many years. Billions in costs will occur that would have been avoided had we kept the NWS intact, and many avoidable deaths will occur.

Now we know what they’re going to do when they want to murder someone. bsky.app/profile/jayw...

This is Nazism.

It’s not just that Trump admires Putin, he’s adopting his playbook. Trump’s comments today on Canada (“an arbitrary border”) and Greenland (“maybe more soldiers go there”) is EXACTLY how Putin talked about Ukraine. None of this is funny. It’s an explicit threat to sovereign nations.

The erosion of trust in science & scientists — sometimes due to complex social/historical factors but often deliberately perpetrated by charlatans — has tragic, deadly consequences, and, if unchecked, is an existential threat to society.

Halting weather balloon launches in Albany is a disaster waiting to happen. No weather balloons means weaker storm tracking, worse forecasts, and more lives at risk. Our community needs full National Weather Service staffing now!

A full paragraph of “he’s no angel” before some mealy-mouthed “this might be unconstitutional.” Seriously, primary Hakeem Jeffries. He is not the man for the hour.

Intentional destruction from within.

A complete and all-out attack on NOAA. Without a functioning NOAA there is no function seafood industry, no functioning radar network, no functioning weather models (US or otherwise). Would you cut a personal investment that saved you 70 times over your original investment every single year? (1/3)

The firings at NOAA are pure theft from the American people. We paid for these services! And now Musk/Trump are unilaterally making them worse, making us less safe, and likely trying to privatize aspects of NOAA. So now we'll have to pay a company for what was freely available before. It's madness.

Scoop: ~33% of NWS offices no longer have sufficient staffing to safely keep 24/7 operations. Critically understaffed @nws.noaa.gov offices now include: Boston Miami Houston Omaha Wichita Kansas City Marquette, MI Sioux Falls, SD Rapid City, SD Cheyenne, WY www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

it was always disingenuous claptrap but as someone who came of age in the Bush era it’s still genuinely stunning to see Rs go from wrapping themselves in The Troops to “vets are all lazy bums who don’t deserve jobs”

A radical left demand that people not be kidnapped, disappear, and die at the hands of the state. www.kentucky.com/news/local/c...

Some people were pretty incredulous when we published this before the election www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

should be fine, we're probably done with tsunamis

Something that deserves recognition: At federal labs such as NOAA’s NSSL, ESRL, or EMC, most employees are first hired on as contractors through a company or cooperative institute. After several years, many get “promoted” by being hired as Feds. These are the “probationary employees” getting fired

NWS is already understaffed, and this mass firing is only going to increase the chance that warnings are not issued in a timely manner and that key equipment like radars and IT systems will fail at the worst time.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

Losing upper-air data has numerous knock-on effects to human and model weather forecasts 🙁

The amount of talent and knowledge that is going to be let go for no good reason whatsoever is maddening. We, as a country, are far worse off without their expertise.

Pretty much every single person among the 100,000s the Trump administration is summarily firing is someone who works hard at a job where they earn much less than they could in the private sector, precisely because they believe in public service.

what we have learned in just these two last weeks is that there is not a single solitary scandal republicans have harped upon in the last two decades that they genuinely cared about. they pretended to care to make political hay. when it’s their side doing it, everything is a-okay by them.

Any further staff cuts to the National Weather Service “means we have a higher — maybe much higher — probability of missing life-saving weather warnings and giving people the heads up they need,” former AMS president/frmr NOAA official Mary Glackin told me. www.cnn.com/2025/02/05/w...

We signed international data sharing agreements. Numerical weather prediction requires global data. We won't know what's coming unless upstream neighbors share their weather measurement data community.wmo.int/en/activity-...

Our weather enterprise is the envy of the world. Don’t ever forget that. It’s impossible to put a price tag on the pride your meteorology public servants have in their work. It’s why I describe NOAA/NWS/NCEP structure and operations in my 100-level classes with genuine pride.

So the whole situation is obviously bad, but on top of that these DOGE guys are using LLMs to help them make their changes, so which LLMs are they using? If they're using just standard OpenAI ChatGPT, then are they uploading a bunch of this TS info to the cloud (ie maybe not staying in the US)?
