I lived in Buffalo through this and it was terrifying, awe-inspiring, and completely crazymaking to see that this party machine that was too inert to even replace lead pipes or *resume fluoridating water* could roar to life like this at a moment's notice

this is a notice to all the dorky grunglers i can't resist out there, if you want me to actually play warhammer or axis & allies with you instead of just regard them with charmed bemusement, your best bet is to book us a cross-country amtrak. i imagine this will be a win-win for you

also must throw whatever expertise i can claim as a longtime psychosis sufferer behind the concerns that LLMs can aggravate & even induce it. schizophrenia like any disorder is a louder version of something in most people and i could hear LLMs speaking that language even back in their shitpost days

i agree with the calls for revivals of the arts & humanities but i want to add i think that should include practice, taste, judgement. imo simply putting pen to paper is not enough to combat AI, we need people learning to determine what's right for their creations and how to get them there

from greek tragedy to Dante to the Twilight Zone our mythologies have understood that the worst torment is a mirror & you make your own hell and now here is a literal offstage incarnation of that idea and it is 1:1 Homer's lotus eaters. we've known this is dangerous since the dawn of knowedge

how the fuck am i of all people pushing for the protestant work ethic on this. the effort is its own reward bro!! you people seem *crushingly* bored, arguably addicted to being bored, and for how funny this all is it's genuinely heartbreaking to watch you trapped by a suffering you can't recognize

a coworker named him later discussing celebs who'd been in there - this was a rich part of atlanta 5 years into the tax haven film boom - others included queen latifah (in the drive thru the ONE TIME i wasn't assigned to it) and daniel radcliffe, who stopped coming after i made a "damn daniel" joke
