It's interesting... a little weird and the combat mechanics can be a bit obtuse at times, but still worth taking a try at.

So I think the Star Ocean 2 Remake did something interesting with the random encounters. The enemies appear on the overworld. So you can see them... In theory you can avoid them. They can also gang up on you (which you can benefit from). You can also increase or decrease the encounter rate.

I recently went through the game again, and minus a few rough fights and missing an ENTIRE chapter's side quests. I had a lot of fun with it.
