An interesting read of how the Math Pope is trying to advocate for an international treaty to regulate AI use. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/pope...

Update. He got comfy.

Am I missing something? This isn't how laws work.

Oh geeze. Two weekends to finish my Anime Expo shit.

If you're going to Dragon Con and have a short variety act (music, puppets, dance, comedy, etc) that's at least vaguely science themed, we're currently curating the science track big Saturday science variety show! Submission deadline is Monday! forms.gle/XZeTf1rmmnqW...

A reminder from Dragon Con - You are who you are and there is nothing wrong with that. "It's about acceptance and belonging. It's about pride and connection and understanding. It's about healing and hope." - Michelle Dockrey (Vixy) dragoncon.tv www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HCK... #DCTV #DragonCon2025

Anime Expo panel! Manga International Network Team (MINT) is an initiative sponsored by the government of Japan that aims to support and offer more international exposure to early-career manga artists with fresh perspectives, original art, and extraordinary stories. July 4, 8:30-9:20 pm, 511ABC

The whole AI boom is being fueled by FOMO and perpetual futurism (all the cool stuff is always 5 years away, in the next version, etc etc).

Hey @brainnotonyet.bsky.social - sorry to bother you, but we have a known bad actor for your Rightwing Media, Hard Block, and Far Right account lists who's getting active here He's been a bugbear in anime and gaming media for a while, as he's done a lot to launder 4chan fash rhetoric over the years

As I literally just yesterday was saying to somebody, if their "AI" is so good and useful for literally, why do they have to keep tricking us into using it, shoving it without warning into all the tools we actually *Want* to use, or otherwise forcing it on us without our consent?

I don't know how much clearer they can be about "we want you to get sick and die"

AI, or more accurately machine learning, can be useful in specific instances (largely parsing large data sets or similar tedious work) with a userbase that knows intimately what they're doing and how to tweak results and recognize bad output in the machine learning. Generative AI is trash.

... I 100% do say it's not useful LLM bullshit makes you lazy. Writing is a job where you need to keep your blade RAZOR sharp because if not, you're just going to make your life harder for your editors and publishers, who will have to READ the insipid bullshit generated by the plagiarism typewriter

Tell me you don't cook yourself without telling me you don't cook. A recipe website with a search function that filters known functional recipes by ingredients and an LLM that generates a recipe that may or may not work/taste good/be edible are NOT the same system nor producing the same thing.

Barry Allen should have stayed dead.

I might quibble with some phrasing, but this is honestly also a startlingly good summation of how and why marginalized people are disproportionately harmed by the proliferation of "AI": You're being trained to think the machine is "like us" and also to disbelieve us when we tell you it's not.

"I asked ChatGPT" "I asked Grok" ok well I asked Gandalf and he said he has not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm

the destruction of chattel slavery is one of the great accomplishments in our nation's history and the reason conservatives hate celebrating it is because doing so legitimizes the black counter-narrative of the united states

The law *literally* says that members of Congress cannot be required to give advance notice.

I keep saying this, but a fundamental problem with this moment is that the two other branches are rolling over and playing dead, and the founders just did not think that people would do that! www.lawdork.com/p/trump-is-s...

I am the chair of Colorado’s judicial performance commissions. One of the things we do is anonymous surveys of lawyers who’ve appeared in front of judges. And they really are anonymous. This is embarrassing in the extreme. How many female judges has this lawyer evaluated? Giving him the benefit…

If you are a writer and you follow me, you know my stance on Gen AI in the arts. If you tell me the only thing you use AI for is your book covers... I will block you. I don't care how friendly you've been with me. I care about artists and many are my friends. I don't support you stealing from them.

No: SERIOUSLY. Y'all need to have a good long think about why so many in "AI" and "Big Data" seem so determined to get others to believe that radical consent models of data collection and use are not only impossible, but wholly undesirable.

No but seriously, whenever one of y'all next tries to tell me that radical consent models of data collection and use aren't possible in "big data" and "AI," I'm gonna say "Thanks for the input Sam Altman, but I really don't know if your views on consent are the ones we'll be needing to hear today."

I asked ICE where the “413% increase in assaults” justification for its officers using masks came from. They didn’t answer. So I dug into it, and what I found … did not boost their argument. Gift link: wapo.st/4l7a1ch

I went to two schools in my hometown named after the loss of life that was the Challenger explosion. It was a NASA town and we took a rocket exploding extremely seriously. It altered the entire culture. Apartheid Emerald is out here blowing up multiple rockets like it's a fire sale. Disgusting.

Kinda odd growing up in the wake of the Challenger explosion and now every few months SpaceX is like yeah shit happens
