“My family was separated by deportation, and I was left behind.” - Diane Guerrero

Moments like this are when you should be educating yourself, so I've put together this playlist of podcasts about the various philosophical ideas that I've based my work defining Verification, Deliberation and Accountability as pillars of healthy democracies around open.spotify.com/playlist/3NJ...

I'd really recommend listening to this episode of Posting Through It with J M Berger, explaining extremism in terms of In groups and Out groups. It has a very clear application to the current situation in the US, with very serious implications for democracy in the US open.spotify.com/episode/5pVs...

Few of the unforgiving rules of British politics seem to apply to Nigel Farage. How is he able to continue increasing his electoral appeal, despite lacking substance and integrity? Perhaps the gift of the gab helps. And a platform gifted by the BBC. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

🧵 I argue that we can understand the functioning of democracy through 3 core ideals, verification, deliberation and accountability. While no democracy fully achieves those ideals, this thread explains how MAGA destroys all three and inevitably results in democratic regression into authoritarianism.

“Donald Trump is a failed negotiator who has completely lost control and credibility in every region in which he claims to be a peacemaker.”

Just say it, bro. What the fuck are you protecting by not just telling us what he said?

No, you won't.

The constant whinging of fascists that they’re the real victims is pathetic & she goes to pieces every time that’s pointed out to her

Again, this won't happen because this is an authoritarian loyalty test and she's passed with flying colours. Loyalty trumps accountability, just keep repeating that over and over until you get what's happening.

You don't deal with authoritarianism by asking nicely.

Compicit in America's slide into authoritarianism, simple as that.

Understand the Republican Party is all about loyalty tests now. Every outrage is an opportunity to reinforce the dominance of the In group and filter out anyone suspected of disloyalty. They don't need to believe anything that's happening is right, they just need to prove loyalty again and again.

Lets see how many Republicans are willing to turn against the In group and be exiled and attacked for their trouble, eh? This is a loyalty test for them and nothing more.

Booker: He was made to kneel before the authority of the executive… They treated a member of the United States senate violently after he identified himself, dragged him out of a room, threw him upon the ground, and put him in handcuffs

That's it. We have now crossed the line, the point of no return, the Rubicon. We're talking at least thirty hours of speech-making, followed by a rigorous book tour. The moment demands nothing less.

Members of the In group will never admit they are wrong or guilty, as that will be seen as betrayal by their fellow travellers and result in exile and attack. This is authoritarian capture in practice right in front of your eyes.

We are marching to Senator Thune’s office. There must be accountability for the detainment of a Senator. This is not normal.

They'll keep doing this until they're stopped, it's their entire thing, they want democracy to collapse so they can rebuild America to be more white, more Christian, and more miserable for anyone who gets in their way.

As much as the removing of a state senator is bad - the fact they are saying they're here to simply remove the leadership of democratically elected local government... seems worse? There is no subtext with Trump. Its all text. They are openly saying what they want to do

It's a feature, not a bug.

Seems yet again relevant considering tonight's events.
