If you haven’t already subscribed to Wired — it’s cheap! they’re great! — I hope this public service will sway you.

They were English, which made the whole 100x more adorable. I swear the whole car teared up a little.

A mom and her toddler (maybe 3?) got on the subway this morning & someone offered their seat. She politely declined because they were getting off next. The cherubic baby looks up at her and says “it’s nice to be nice.” And she said “yes it is darling.”

"Real pain for my sham friends" now official slogan of the United States of America

NEW: Five of the billionaires who attended Donald Trump's inauguration have lost a combined $210 billion in wealth since then, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index

NEW: How Elon Musk Muscled His Way Into the FAA FAA employees are on edge. They were told that anyone who impeded progress of the new FAA-SpaceX partnership would be reported to Musk and risked losing their jobs. A ton of scoopy news in this new report. 🎁 www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

US companies are downplaying climate work to avoid negative Trump attention. European companies are downplaying climate work to avoid greenwashing accusations. Welcome to the "greenhushing" era. Great read by @oliviarudgard.bsky.social @cocojournalist.bsky.social: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

when I began reporting in NYC, we had 4 daily local papers (the News, Post, Newsday & NYTMetro) plus Village Voice & lots of community weeklies—big stuff like this got big headlines—every pol & voter responded & felt agency. Overhearing lots of absolutely A+ weather small talk today.

When we say “we’re toast,” this is what we are talking about

Nothing about those meal prep videos makes me want to eat the same thing on Thursday that I chopped up on Sunday.

IT IS FRIDAY. So please, if I may, a story. This is the story of The Exorcism of the Pentagon. (1/X)

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

She’s (almost) a real book!!

One of the things I realized during the pandemme was that I had very few photos of my friends. I have tried to take as many as I can, which is often awkward and foolish, but worth it. And sending one to a mutual friend we're thinking of is the best!

I'm sure plenty of other people have made this observation before but: The AI movie trailers are so fucking weird.

Mike Leigh imagines what a #Bond film directed by him would look like: "The entire film would be James Bond visiting his elderly mother in a suburban house, spending a bit of time with her, and then leaving," he tells Empire.

Netflix: Welcome back. Would you like to watch the rest of this movie you watched 3 minutes of 2 years ago? Apple TV: Hello! You’re new here! Oh Slow Horses is what you want? That’s 3 screens away. You probably want to start on season 1, episode 1.

Wrote a little thing about how to have fun at parties (without feeling bad the next day) www.nytimes.com/2024/12/17/w...

Twice isn’t really that many times to check a list. Just saying.

I don't know who needs to know this, but Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases) projects.propublica.org/claimfile/

I once had a professor ask “Why is there a Business section in the newspaper but not a Labor section?” My classmates and I probably rolled our eyes, but damned if I haven’t remembered that question every few days for 30 years now.

what did I just read?

It’s my final week as (temporary) Dear Prudie at SLATE, and now that I’ve completed that side quest, I think more of you probably need to get divorced.

My daughter got called into the office and said she was all nervous that she was in trouble but then the dean told her "I asked you to come because I know you're a reliable narrator."

Best case scenario: Mon Mothma's chief of staff or communications director or something. Worst case scenario: Syril Karn's terrifying mother Eedy.

My take as a public administration scholar: "Andor is to the Star Wars franchise movies what a LeCarré novel is to James Bond movies. It dwells in the gritty detail, petty bureaucracy and moral ambiguity of a shadowy world." open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

okay everyone act chill & normal, our crushes are starting to join bluesky. let’s not fuck this up

In the three majority-Native districts in Alaska, the 'no' to repealing RCV won 64% to 36%, netting 2,960 votes. Statewide, the 'no' only won by 664 votes. This was not a coincidence, but result of plenty of organizing, & work by Native leaders: boltsmag.org/alaska-measu...

I woke up in an absolute rage today. Looking forward to this happening a lot in the next few years.

All this talk of the treasury is making me nostalgic!

A lot of <0.1-point races this year across both federal and state offices. Don’t let anybody ever tell you your vote doesn’t matter!
