Important piece on the spiraling scope of terrorism designations -- and timely given the Trump administration's designation of 8 drug cartels as "foreign terrorist organizations."

If she'll permit me to spoil the ending: "terrorist" designation lists are imperial, racist tools and should be abolished. In careful detail, Elizabeth tells you why. Must-read ⬇️

It actually doesn't mean they're eligible for drone strikes, hope this helps!!!

Important piece to check out from @elizabethrb.bsky.social.

My latest law journal article is out! In this one, I analyze the mechanisms by which the U.S. government designates individuals, organizations, and governments as "terrorist," and the downstream consequences that flow to people many steps removed from the violence.

Re-upping this for no reason!

this throwaway paragraph, I -

Was great to join @nonzeronews.bsky.social to talk with @connorechols.bsky.social all about terror designations πŸ‘‡

pay attention to how the never-ended War on Terror with all its still-active powers, resources and infrastructure is about to give us a new war on immigrants and possibly Mexico itself

The Senate will vote soon whether to sanction the International Criminal Court for applying laws to Israel like any other country. The US has consistently had the attitude that accountability is great for Designated Bad countries, but not for us or our friends. More πŸ‘‡

if you've been telling me for a year+ that Biden has no control over what happens in Gaza, please don't try to also tell me now that he just singlehandedly brought about a ceasefire

I'm an advocate and a scholar. I was asked to write about this. I was hesitant bc I'm in a moment of major transition and uncertainty. But that's real life! So here's my story:

Since I wrote this, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization has seized de facto control of Syria. The US government says it is not currently reviewing that status. Read my article again with that in mind.

"History...contains within it a story that implicates or justifies political order...If you believe that history, then you are primed to believe that the American state is a force for good... that these inexplicable haters of freedom are worthy of our drones." [Coates]

" ... not only should policymakers decline to expand US terrorist designation lists, they should fully dismantle what already exists, too." Snaps to @elizabethrb.bsky.social (whose forthcoming longer article on this I had the pleasure of reading early).

Great insight from @elizabethrb.bsky.social. Looking forward to the longer law journal article coming out soon.

It’s Time for the US to Ditch β€˜Terrorism’ Designations Altogether By: @elizabethrb.bsky.social

Ultimately, terrorist designations are political tools that serve US geopolitical goals, writes @elizabethrb.bsky.social

A provocative but wholly sincere proposal: πŸ—£ "Terrorist" designations should not exist. These are not objective legal designations but rather tools of primacy and suppression that cause massive harm. I hope you'll give my argument good faith consideration. Link below πŸ‘‡
