Niche gripe: Any recipe for bread pudding that starts with you buying a specific nice kind of bread, like brioche or challah. Buying a challah to make bread pudding is like buying new clothes to open a thrift store. The whole point is turning scraps into a dessert that's different every time. BAH

A lovely Icelandic term for pins and needles (tingling after your foot goes numb) is stjörnur í skónum, or “stars in your shoes.” A Yoruba version is pajapaja (“kill dog kill dog”). And the best one I’ve heard in German (uttered by a friend’s child) was mein Fuß glitzert. It means “my foot twinkles”
