Since Alison isn't in the sky 🦋, I'll share the exciting news that her book "Envisioning the Empress: The Lives and Images of Japanese Imperial Women, 1868–1952" is out now! 🥳 I had the privilege of reading some of this great work in our writing group along the way! www.routledge.com/Envisioning-...

「列島」の絵画 「日本画」のレイトスタイル by 北澤憲昭 . This out of print book finally arrived, after looking for it the past 14 months. Paintings of the Archipelago: Nihonga’s late style. Potential for #20InfluentialBooks list on #JapaneseArtHistory but I haven’t read it. A wonderful way to end the semester!

There are still a few weeks left in the year (though December is generally a quiet month for book proposals), but it looks like I’m going to close out 2024 with around 80% of total book proposals coming from men, 18% from women, and 2% from persons whose gender was not apparent/obvious.

Some reflections on why (beyond the obvious) the painting of ancient statues has been controversial for so long. tinyurl.com/47bb2tud

Whenever I give workshops on academic book publishing, authors inevitably have questions about how to talk with editors at conferences. Worry no more! Laura Portwood-Stacer has just published a free e-book on this very topic! click.convertkit-mail.com/r8u0z4n5xpuo...

TIL about 馬来語熱, "Malay Fever," a surging popularity in the study of the Malaysian language in wartime Japan, spurred largely by ideas of the Co-Prosperity Sphere. One clear indicator: this chart of the languages pursued by students at Keio University's Foreign Language School upon admission in 1942

Day Four of Grading and it’s done. Starting another batch ( 25 papers ) tomorrow. Celebrating with this. Looks good but tastes awful.

In cases such as this, those who use racist and derogatory language or words are less subjected to this so-called 'civility rule'...

Day Three of Grading Marked over 65 percent of student essays today. Into the last leg for tomorrow. Then repeat for the other course I’m teaching.

Grading Day Two 📃 It’s Sunday so not much can be accomplished but we are on a tight deadline here. This however, got me off to a great start. If anyone is near a Kaldi, grab this. It transforms your average toast into Kouign Amann. I wished I had bought more back with me here.
