Hello, we are a 2-year part-time (can work alongside) online ("live" *options*; costs the same, can study from everywhere) MSc course on learning/intellectual disability, autism, and neurodiversity. Students have own tutor. We are recruiting for September. To learn more: port.ac.uk/study/course...

Identity-first or person-first language is an individual choice. Both are valid, but you should always respect everyone's individual choice. If you don't know, ask! I prefer identity-first, which means I refer to myself as a disabled person.

Today's discussion of disability and media representation in #DisabilityStudies turned into collective dreaming of what changes to media representation we want to see: disabled main characters, multiply disabled characters, disabled people with literally any other identity/personality traits, etc.

Instead of offering AI to disabled people, we could—*thinks*—create a physical and social world that’s actually accessible

This is the most wonderful thing I have seen all day: quirky knitting machine manual graphics rendered in block print. 🤩 I would so love to make a little summer top printed all over with this. #DHmakes

My surgeon has recommended exploratory surgery to see what's going on in my knee. We have tried every other treatment option and nothing has worked. It's unlikely that he'll find anything fixable, but he said it's worth trying anyway because of my age and the level of pain. Wish me luck, I guess?

I want you to pay attention to something. Remote workers are now often people like me, high-risk and disabled people who can’t safely access a normal Workplace due to Covid anymore. This is now being stigmatized, along with supporting trans rights, as unfit for work. That’s Nazi 101.

OK, c19th print friends: it's 1815 or 1816 imprint, distinctive spelling in the title on this vs attested editions, no publisher/printer listed on the TP. I can't find any other examples of it in WorldCat, it's not in Early American Imprints, where else do I need to look?

When my dad became paralyzed when I was a 1 1/2, the state would onlyhel my family if I was put in foster care. When my son was born, a doc refused to believe my husband & I went to college. Systematic discrimination against parents w/ #disability is so pervasive. #ADA

They love disabled people in “inspirational” stories, until we ask for healthcare, jobs, and rights.

There is so much happening right now that affects my students, but I teach in a state where I’m not legally supposed to bring up these issues. However, I teach a #DisabilityStudies class, and disability rights and politics are literally part of the course content.

NNELS is hiring! We have several exciting employment opportunities - Accessibility Experts, an Audiobook Coordinator, Production Assistants, and a Training and Awareness Coordinator. For more information, visit the NNELS job posting page:

hoping y’all can point me to articles, books, documentaries, podcasts, etc that you’ve found particularly useful in your understanding of eugenics and/or disability justice? TIA!

I finished (and submitted) what I was working on! Now I can spend my evening doing art and printing.

The habit of constantly hitting ctrl+s to save my document after every sentence or edit even though I'm in a Google Doc. You can tell I don't often work in Docs. 😅

deaf/signing communities: 1. what signs are folks using for misinformation, disinformation, propoganda, etc? 2. deaf/hearing interpreters and captioner skilled/experienced in moving info on these topics in english/spanish/asl? thanks!

I need to write and edit today, but all I really want to do is print and make art. At least my writing work today is about art, but I just got some new block printing materials this week that I really that to play with.

Something I wish educators would grapple with more is the environmental cost of genAI/AI. Even beyond LLMs, at the high school level, there really isn't anything our students are doing that is so important they need to burn down the rainforest and drain the local water supply for.

Five major airlines are suing to overturn a rule from then-Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg that actually holds airlines accountable for damaging disabled people's wheelchairs. New from me at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Asking a stranger why they use a mobility aid or assistive device is an invasive medical question. So... don't do it. And if you forget and ask anyway, do not be shocked or offended when the stranger refuses to answer.

Just a reminder that The Winter Knight makes a fun Valentine’s Day read! Queer knights, awkward nerds, a trans sorceress, and just a wee bit of spice.

There has been some conversation re: what to do about the #SHARP conference, given that it is in the US this year. This is my email to the conference organizers asking them to transition to hybrid. Full text is in the alt text if you want to copy to use some or all of the email for yourself.

Are you doing organizer work right now? Make your events inclusive This guide is intended to help organizers think through ways to include a spectrum of people (with and without disabilities) in your public event. sinsinvalid.org/access-sugge...

My faculty, @sfu-fhs.bsky.social, is hiring a tenure track assistant professor in health communication. We're open to a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Located in metro Vancouver, Canada we have a very welcoming environment for health-related research. See here for more and please share!

Okay look, I know things are bad right now. I get it. But I'm really tired of seeing ableist language and slurs being used to describe what's happening. You can be angry and you can criticize without hurting disabled people. Be aware of the language you're using.
