Very pleased that @bobelliot.bsky.social will be the first Wild Justice CEO. He’s a great guy and a good fit. Onwards and upwards!

A small gall-wasp, possibly Andricus quercuscalicsis, sitting on a gate near my garden today

Wall chart of tree buds The hi-res file is a free download, or you can buy a print. Also a poster of tree leaves, and tree bark and check out the rest of my shop - canvases , prints, t-shirts, mugs, cards microcosmic.shop

Collared Earthstar (Geastrum triplex) I think, one of several in a patch at the base of an old tree stump

Curlews, hen harriers, black grouse, GPS collars for cattle and no moorland burning: excellent to hear that the RSPB’s Geltsdale reserve will be expanding in size www.theguardian.com/environment/...

That's now 55,000 people calling for a ban on driven grouse shooting. Thanks to all of you who signed, please keep spreading the word. Sign here: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... #SayNoMoor

Fancy joining a fantastic team that punches way above its weight for plant science and conservation across Britain and Ireland, supporting an amazing group of #BSBImembers and volunteers? Of course you do! Head to bsbi.org/vacancies/ad... to find out more, and please spread the word 😁

51,000 signatures on our petition and the latest constituency to reach 200 signatures is Angus and Perthshire Glens where they know a thing or two about the impacts of driven grouse shooting. Plz sign petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... & then share widely. Thank you!

49,000 signatures for banning driven grouse shooting - thank you for your strong support. Plz sign & share petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... Looking forward to 50,000 soon.

Just part of the incredible scene on the fields planted with mixed seed crops either side of Marston Rd in Oxford. Up to 1000 Linnet, 200 Chaffinch, 30-40 Yellowhammer & Reed Buntings here, within the city boundary.

Wow, the whole Ireland (and parts of the UK) are under red warning. We are talking about truly historically powerful storm with wind gusts over land areas (!) exceeding 36 m/s. Stay safe! Minimum pressure could reach all-time record lows (~940 hPa) in the Scotland area.

This is George Monbiot's "X" leaving speech, and wow ❤️ @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

A deeply disappointing government response to @wildjustice.bsky.social’s petition on banning driven grouse shooting, that even cites bullshit stats from the shooting industry Please sign the petition, let’s get it to 100k and force a proper debate: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Lots of these around on the snow today, one of the winter craneflies I think

Interesting to see this ‘iron flush’ being a warm spot along our local burn today

Today, one month after our petition launched, we've reached 33,000 signatures calling for a ban on driven grouse shooting. That's a third of the number we need, in one sixth of the time we've got - pretty good! Please keep it up - sign and share: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... #SayNoMoor

It’s funny that we call it “dead” wood, when it can support so much life! 🪵🪲🐜🍄 Here’s a video I made earlier in the year, to spread some love for this vital habitat. #Invertebrates #Fungi #Deadwood #Ecology 🧪

1/ Great news! 🎉BTO, JNCC and RSPB are making decades of Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data freely available for everyone in the conservation and research community. This includes over 7 million records! 📝 Find out more ⬇️ or read the paper➡️ bit.ly/_BBSData #Ornithology #UKBirding

No alternative to flattening our green spaces for unaffordable new build homes ? But there is ! Read the briefing and send it to your MP . We need HomesForEveryone.org

28,000 signatures - thank you! It’s a joint effort. @chrisgpackham.bsky.social tells me not to fret but, still, I do, so please have a look at petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... and sign if you can. And share widely please.

That’s the plans for the A’ Mhòine spaceport in Sutherland up in flames, they going to Shetland instead! So what happens now to the half-baked development next to the wader SPA?!, before photo (right) and after (left) below 👇 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

#Peregrine pair feeding on a Barnacle Goose, which the female took down, just below the house here at @rspb.bsky.social The Oa. A brief moment of absence allowed me a rapid opportunity to move a camera trap from a nearby wader scrape and onto the goose kill. @rspbscotland.bsky.social

Here’s a short story about who wins and loses from the status quo of our inheritance tax rules - and about, what you might politely call ‘sub-optimal’ journalism🧵

Suillia affinis from local East Devon woods. Any ecologists out there with a backlog of Diptera needing determinations? I have space for sub-contracted work going into December/January and beyond. Please contact me if I can help! #dipteraidentification www.dipteraid.co.uk Please share, thanks!

And another 1000 signatures - thank you. 11,000! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Huge congratulations to my friends @kattyponder.bsky.social & Mark Cubitt, on receiving NBN awards this week! Much deserved recognition for their devotion to moth recording in Scotland. 👏 nbn.org.uk/news-events-... #MothsMatter

Good morning! This @wildjustice.bsky.social petition on driven grouse shooting is 2nd most-signed petition in last hour. We approach 6k signatures. I'd love to reach 10k before 3:30pm (ie first 24hrs). It'll be tough but let's send a strong message to Defra. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Woohoo! No more excuses, it's time to ROVE. Huge congrats to Andrew Duff for completing this monumental achievement

I would like you, please, to sign this petition to ban driven grouse shooting. The first under a Labour government. 10k signatures gets a government response, 100k a debate in Westminster parliament. UK residents & UK citizens living abroad can sign. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Barnacle Geese resting on the beach at Eoligarry this morning, part of the 240-strong flock that winters in the Sound of Barra. Also 6 Snow Buntings on the beach and a handful of Slavonian Grebes offshore. #BirdingScotland #birds

I wish this counted as one of the nerdier things I've done, but it's probably not even top 10. I've tagged most of my flickr photos by county, country and various taxonomic terms - so if you want some Cornish hoverflies, you're in luck www.flickr.com/search/?user...

Need photos of invertebrates for education/conservation purposes? Check out www.flickr.com/photos/runne... for 9,000 or so free to use images. Mostly UK, but also a bit from further afield, and a bird/plant/mammal sneaks through occasionally.

We are currently seeking staff for 2025. If you are interested, you must possess exceptional birding skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and preferably a BTO ringing license, although latter is not essential.

We are now accepting applications for the positions of Head of Ornithology and Hospitality Manager with the aim of hiring new personnel to run the new Fair Isle Bird Observatory for the 2025 season onwards. For more information, visit our website www.fairislebirdobs.co.uk

The Oct 2024 update to Who Owns Scotland is now published adding 100 new landholdings covering 116,868 acres of land. In total 3600 landholdings cover 73.97% of rural Scotland. The project is financed solely by subscription income. Please subscribe at whoownsscotland.org.uk

It’s that time of year when lots of cattle head indoors, with only ours and a small group of our neighbour’s kept out over winter in this valley. So from now on, dung dwellers start to struggle for habitat & food. Particularly where it’s still mild so they are still active 🪲

Well that was unexpected. Walked out the front of the house at RSPB The Lodge today to be confronted with this stick insect sitting on a Yew. I think it's Bacillus rossius, but how it got there is anyone's guess. #Invertebrates #BugSky #UKWildlife

Woodcock migration happens in October & November. To reduce pressure on British-bred birds, many UK shoots delay shooting until 1 December. (Season opens on 1 Sep in Scotland and 1 October elsewhere). Blog about Woodcock conservation: wadertales.wordpress.com/2015/10/26/c... #ornithology
